Just in case, im-in.space now has a warrant canary.
https://im-in.space/canary.json

I'm using the CanaryTail standard and tools.

Some Android apps (like Tusky and Fedilab) might use ntfy.sh for push notifications if you have it installed on your phone too. And there's exactly 10 people on im-in.space who are in this case.

Unfortunately - and I'm sure it's not intentional - someone had 15 subscriptions with the same URL. So when they got one (1) push notification, we would send 15 requests to ntfy.sh.
At some point the service did reply with a code 429 to say it's too much, but then it started to timeout instead.
And so our instance waits for the timeout… of ~15 requests. And when the timeout hits (3-5min?), it goes into the retry queue to try again a few minutes later.

The thing is, our Sidekiq queue currently has 100 threads. So imagine if there's 7 push notifications in a short span. The queue fills up with the new requests + all the retries, and we end up with no available workers to do the push/pull of posts.

So yeah, ntfy.sh can't handle that much + apps need to know if they already have a subscription and update that.

A note about bird.im-in.space.
We've set a limit of 150 followings per account.
If you try to follow more than 150 accounts, your follow request will be rejected.
This limit may be lowered in the future to control our API limits with Twitter.

New people, welcome to Mastodon and the Fediverse!

Here's how to get started:

1. Find some people to follow over on @FediFollows, and through Trunk (https://communitywiki.org/trunk)

2. Find out your Mastodon/Fediverse address so you can share it with friends (https://mstdn.social/@feditips/107248252715651564)

3. Invite people to join you on here by telling them to go to https://joinmastodon.org and click on "Get Started". It doesn't matter if they join a different server because the servers talk to each other (here's a bit more of an explanation https://mstdn.social/@feditips/107021461185874594)

4. Find out what the Fediverse is (https://mstdn.social/@feditips/107044096139091624)

5. Find out why Mastodon being on so many different servers/instances is a really good thing (https://mstdn.social/@feditips/107083735491993183)

6. If you see anything nasty, you can report it to your friendly server admin (https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106540152842368591)

7. You can (sort of) verify your account if you own a website (https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106274105538953001)

If you have any questions, @ me or DM me!

Trunk for the Fediverse

And we're properly back online!
Now running on our new (also cheaper and better) server, Lucy.

im-in.space is going down in 30 minutes while we migrate to our new server!

So I need to give a name to the upcoming im-in.space server.
We've used Space Core and Rosetta so far.

I've picked 4 options:

  • IKAROS - A spacecraft launched in 2010 who had a fly by of Venus and uses solar sailing as a main propulsion. Also a waifu.
  • Juno - Launched in 2011, the spacecraft's mission is to investigate Jupiter and is still in operation and bringing new discoveries.
  • Lucy - Cute name, a spacecraft launched in October 2021 and currently on a 12 years journey to visit 8 asteroids.
  • Rosalind - This time it's a rover, Rosalind Franklin, which is named after the British DNA pioneer. Launch is expected in September this year and it should land on Mars in June 2023.
