The new French laws restricting tekno parties are royally absurd. Hard to top John Major's "repetitive beats are a national security threat" line, but this comes close. Free parties need very little, and have a proven record of being safe. The smart thing would be to leave them be. Even smarter: Bring some of that self-help & solidarity back into our day to day lives. But the clowns on top can't think beyond trying to commercialise it, or failing which, killing it.

1st of May Festival at Zürich was a revelation. Vast ex military barracks smack in the centre of town transformed into 3 days of noise, fanzines, recycling, and generally giving the finger to the worst of the modern world. You'd never see something like this in France, or it would be hidden deep in the country. But it's over now, and they must all be back emptying dustbins, working at McDonald's, or doing whatever else the bankers and the CEOs have left for them to do.

Switzerland is - funnily enough - great too. Wouldn't automatically think of it as a punk powerhouse, but Zurich has one of the last great European alternative scenes full of weirdos who think it's a good idea to pogo to a drum machine. It's like a flip side to all the painstaking order and cleanliness.

We're on tour again. Organising one is a European geography lesson. We're from Toulouse, so Spain would logically make sense, but we've hardly ever been there. Then there are these huge dead zones where nothing ever happens - the entire middle of France, most of southern & central Germany (the fun is around Cologne, Hamburg, Leipzig, Berlin.) Industrial death either results in Nazis or in a flourishing alternative scene.
