I’m enjoying all the coverage the ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter mission is getting today for its first images of the Sun’s poles 🌞🛰️
This is a key part of the mission, using Venus gravity assists to lift the spacecraft out of the ecliptic where it can look down (or up 😬) on the poles. The physics there is expected to be very interesting 🤨
However, the pedant in me feels compelled to point out that these are not the first *ever* images of the poles 😬

Die USA sind inzwischen das, was man einen FAILED STATE nennt, und Europa täte gut daran, endlich erwachsen zu werden.
Have this friend who is newish to #astrophotography here in Sydney. He did 40-hour mosaic on the Vela Supernova remnant in h-alpha/[O-III] …. And holy heck it is incomprehensibly magnificent! 🔭
Those are exploded star gutz. At its heart is the Vela pulsar. 📡

Temperamental #stars that brighten and dim over a matter of hours or days may be distorting our view of thousands of distant #planets.
Most of the information we have about #exoplanets comes from looking at dips in starlight as these planets pass in front of their host star.
fluctuations in the starlight due to hotter and colder regions on a star's surface may be distorting our interpretations of planets more than we previously thought.
