Social Inequalities in the Risk and Aftermath of Miscarriage (SOC-MISC).

An ERC Starting Grant funded project analysing the social inequalities in the risk and consequences of miscarriage in Finland, France, and the UK lead by @heinivaisanen

The project aims to:
1. develop methodologies to study miscarriage
2. examine social inequalities in miscarriage risk
3. study social inequalities in health consequences of miscarriage
4. compare these results between areas/countries.

📢 The SOC-MISC project will participate in #EPC2026 in Bologna!

@heinivaisanen sent a paper on social inequalities in #miscarriage risk in #Finland (https://epc2026.eaps.nl/abstracts/260835)

MC Compans's paper is on the same topic in #France (https://epc2026.eaps.nl/abstracts/261481)

💡 Among those hospitalised, financially precarious women were more likely to stay overnight — pointing to potential delays and complications

We could improve miscarriage care by tackling access barriers, investing in counselling, and tailoring support for the most vulnerable

3/3

💡 Most miscarriages do not lead to hospitalisation — many are managed in outpatient settings, primary care or outside the healthcare system

💡 Rural areas, financial precarity, chronic conditions, age and prior miscarriage history are associated with higher hospitalisation rates

🆕 New preprint!

We know surprisingly little about how people navigate care after pregnancy loss. We explore this using French national health insurance records.

Key findings below 👇

OSF

We find relatively similar & plausible #miscarriage estimates: 18-24% of women experience miscarriages, and 14-21% of all pregnancies are miscarriages.
Miscarriage rates by age are similar to a previous study for younger age groups, but the estimates diverge from age 35, indicating uncertainty.

📢 New preprint alert: #Miscarriage reporting in longitudinal and cross-sectional surveys in #GreatBritain!
We compare miscarriage questions and prevalence estimates in British cohort, panel & cross-sectional surveys.

From research to action 💥

Two weeks ago, the SOC-MISC team hosted a workshop with Dr Mégane Acheche. Her clinical expertise at Besançon University Hospital is key to laying the foundations for some important next steps of the SOC-MISC project.
More information coming soon!

🔍 In this session on pregnancy loss, we welcome papers exploring:
✨ Theoretical perspectives (on grief, reproductive justice, biomedicalization)
✨ Methodological innovations and mixed-methods approaches
✨ Empirical research on experiences, inequalities in access to care and support
