Not enough people understand that if your problem is a nation state level actor, the solution will not consist of an app on your phone.

@soatok personal anecdote: i used matrix briefly, i believe on the main instance, looking for a potential discord alternative for my friendgroup. not being able to put 2fa on a username/password account killed it for me. also can't use SSO (edit: probably not the right word. i'm unwell today. the thing where you sign on with e.g. google) once you've already made a username/password account. so it's either go in with only a password and hope for the best, or inextricably link your matrix account to another service - neither of those is particularly attractive to me!

i wish them the best and all but. uh.

I completely agree. I recommend Signal because the alternatives are worse. That doesn’t mean I’m happy with Signal. There’s a lot I’d like them to improve. But improving Signal is a lot easier than building something new and making everyone switch or getting one of the other alternatives to the same end goal.
