Just a 30something Canadian dude from #VancouverIsland who's into #RetroComputing (mainly old #Apple / #Mac stuff), #Programming, and general #Technology enthusiast. Also love to #Travel!

I wrote a Mastodon client for vintage Mac computers, #Macstodon, which you can get from here: https://github.com/smallsco/macstodon

Occasionally I’ll post about #Anime and #Gaming, especially #ZenlessZoneZero and #HonkaiStarRail.

I boost a lot. Boosts are not endorsements.

When the machines rise, we'll need the ultimate digital security to protect our physical goods. This beautiful box uses everybody's favorite - reCAPTCHA - to keep the bots OUT.

Now seeking investors!!

So the main "arguments" when I say "AI doesn't work" and "it will collapse" are:

1. "You don't know what you're talking about"
2. "It's inevitable and here to stay, might as well go with the program"
3. "But it's almost there! Just last week they released [name of model] that is so close!"

Literally no one ever replies with any concrete examples with how it reliably, ethically and non-wastefully works for them to increase their productivity and improve their and other people's lives in any meaningful way.

It's always ad hominems, hypotheticals or deeply flawed "it sort of works for this".

#Mastodon 4.4 is out with support for showing quote toots, so Mastodon for Apple II is out too with that new feature.
You can get it at the usual place!

Let's hope the safeties they put around this feature will work well enough that the place doesn't become toxic.

Infinite Mac can now be embedded into any website: https://infinitemac.org/embed

For a demonstration of what this can enable, see @mwichary's amazing "Frame of preference" article: https://aresluna.org/frame-of-preference/

And for a behind the scenes look, there's a blog post: https://blog.persistent.info/2025/07/infinite-mac-embedding.html (spoiler: Marcin was the instigator for all this, conducted over a months-long 100+ message email thread).

No, computers won’t replace humans to write code for themselves.

Please stop with this nonsense.

What we will see though is tremendous losses in productivity as deskilled programmers will get less and less education and practice—and take longer and longer to make broken AI-generated code work. Meanwhile, AI models will regress from eating their own generated shit when being trained on.

Eventually AI companies will finally run out of investors to scam—and when they disappear or get so expensive they become unaffordable, “prompt engineers” will be asked to not use AI anymore.

What’s gonna happen then?

We’re losing a whole generation of programmers to this while thought leaders in our field are talking about “inevitability” and are jerking off to sci-fi-nostalgia-fueled fantasies of AGI.

YES!!

I successfully repaired my Apple 40SC Tape backup drive by creating a new 3D printed capstan for it. I then was able to recover some lost Apple / Claris engineer's goodies from 36 years ago! 😮

Read all about it here... 📼

Web comics about emerging technology don't generally age that well, but the passage of a mere decade hasn't blunted this one a bit.
i wonder how the people using ai assisted terminals are doing

I recently received an email that at first glance appeared to be a well-crafted phishing message, warning that my Microsoft Entra ID was going to expire in a month if I didn't make a purchase. The only piece of information in the message was my supposed Entra ID.

After checking with Microsoft it appears this automated message is legitimate, and it is in reference to a Microsoft Teams trial account I created for a day and then abandoned. But apart from the Entra ID, which isn't mentioned in any prior communications from Microsoft, there is zero context for the user.

How hard would it be for Microsoft to include just a tiny bit more information in each message? Like, "Hey, this message is about an account created 5 years ago, for Teams" or something. Otherwise these marketing messages train users to fall for phishing scams.

Control Panel 1.0 -
