I want to teach a class on repurposing electronics. We could start out just taking some broken things apart and seeing if we can fix them, but every student would have to pick something to repurpose or revive as a semester-long project. Maybe they want to turn an old propane lantern into an LED lantern, convert a cordless drill with dead nicad batteries to lithium, or jailbreak an e-bike. Everyone should leave the class with a device or appliance with a new lease on life. A community college should hire me for this
Today's keynote should be a nice talk

So turns out you just had to press enter to set a supervisor password before you're allowed to change anything else such as secure boot settings.

But you still cannot change the secure boot mode from Standard to anything else. I still ended up following this anyway: https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/Create_UEFI_secureboot_USB

@nath the problem is that everything, including the UEFI password menu is greyed out and cannot be changed

Welp. I have encountered a Acer Swift 3 SF314-42 laptop which actually enforces secure boot by default AND where the UEFI setup menu for options relating to secure boot have been greyed out.

I was trying to install Alpine Linux on this machine, but seems like I will have to make a bootable USB with the shim to get it to boot. Interesting.

WOW.

With the news that Bluesky closed a $100M Series B (!!) last April and didn't tell anyone (??) until now, it's just become far more obvious that Bluesky is inching very close to its full enshittification era.

You don't raise that kind of money unless you're ready for *massive* capture of eyeballs and ecosystem control.

I am telling you right now, Bluesky in another year or two will look very, *very* different. (And tbh, it's not that great now.)

Have no fear, 'cause I iz here.

Unfortunately, this disappearance was not a false alarm. A few of us were arrested on the evening of 16 March, and all but one person was released on bail on the 18th. I am doing alright myself, although some were traumatized by the experience.

We will need some time to rest, decompress and consider our legal options. I will provide more details about what transpired when we are able to do so.

Thank you all for your concern & support!

With love,
Joyce/BitOwl
