If we are rethinking social networks, maybe it is also a good time to rethink what social networks mean to us. Following prominent and prolific people can turn your feed into a read-only experience. Meh.
Mastodon has this half-baked feature called "lists". It's basically an account filter. So I am creating a list named "People Who Respond Back". I want to pay more attention to what those people have to say.
Musk bought TWTR in a leveraged buyout, and the investment banks are going to lose more billions in that stupid deal than Musk. But that's not even the worst financial boondoggle right now because FTX made billions just vanish in thin air.
So.. this legendary efficiency and trustworthiness of private sector... is it in the room with us right now?
Listened to a wonderful discussion between @klonick and @arozenshtein about decentralized social media. I have a question/comment:
The centralized social networks pay a massive price to employ T&S / legal experts, and huge armies of content moderators. The idea that we can make that cost go away by simply rearranging the network topology feels way too good to be true.
There is nothing preventing centralized social networks from adopting similar model if it cut costs! What are we missing here?
