The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and its newly notified Rules risk reshaping India’s information ecosystem, and not for the better.
Without a journalistic exemption and with a weakened RTI framework, the law threatens press freedom, public interest reporting, and democratic transparency.

The DDN Session today by Angela Thomas, Volunteer Counsel for SFLC.in on "Online Gender Based Violence" pressed the urgent need to confront the escalating threats women face across digital spaces.

As technology becomes ever more central to daily life, ensuring equal access means little without also guaranteeing safety, dignity, and the freedom for women to participate without fear.

This session emphasized stronger protections, inclusive digital literacy, and gender-responsive policies.

Businesses across India continue to demand phone numbers or email IDs before issuing a simple bill, even though the law does not require it. Our campaign, Bill Do, Number No, highlights how this practice undermines your privacy and goes against the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 and the DPDP Act, 2023.

Our community survey shows that both major retail chains and local stores routinely pressure customers for personal data. Have you experienced this too? Tell us in the comments.

SFLC.in was covered for highlighting impact of recent government directions on digital communication tools. Mishi Choudhary explained that frequent logouts and SIM-linking requirements will slow down everyday workflows, especially for teams relying on web versions of messaging apps. She also said that sudden rollout timelines leave organisations with little room to adapt, while repeated SIM checks and system-level requirements raise new concerns on user privacy, autonomy, and proportionality.

Founder, sflc.in, Mishi Choudhari’s expert analysis featured across major media this month on DPDP compliance burdens for startups, expanded state access under Rule 23, and sweeping proposals on online content regulation. A crucial moment for digital rights & constitutional safeguards.
