iPhone 5 is Obsolete

On March 16, 2026, Apple updated its vintage and obsolete products list and added iPhone 5 to the obsolete list. iPhone 5 was my first iPhone. I haven’t been actively using it for over 9 years at this point (I still pull it out of the drawer and hold it every few months), but seeing the news story just reminded me of my old phone, and the memories. From my former self: The joy of using an iPhone is in the little things, like not having to press a button when you’ve entered your 4-digit passcode, the way the speaker and earphones volumes always is controlled separately, the way you see the brightness slider slides subtly to low or high when the light in the room changes. The small ways in which when you use it, you know someone at Apple has spent their time making it just right. You can’t always put your finger on it, but you realize you’re accustomed to that care, so much that may be even pampered, even when you temporarily use someone else’s phone.

25 Years of Wikipedia

Wikipedia turned 25 last month, and they created a website to showcase their journey, remind us about their core goals, and briefly look to the future. It is inspiring, as all things Wikipedia usually are. I was skeptical of Wikipedia initially, from the little I remember. It still amuses me just how volunteer-driven humanity’s premier encyclopedia is. From the website: [The Wikipedia authors’] work represents almost 25 years of humanity at its best—the humans of today, organizing themselves to benefit the humans of tomorrow.

My AI stance in 2026 is pretty simple: AI is amazing for some things, but it’s not the right tool for every job. Many people are learning this right now.

I also think AI tools are best when paired with a human guiding them, and I don’t think this will stop being the case. People still really matter.

Just because there are good things doesn’t matter you should shy away from criticizing the bad things.

Strongly recommend against the mindset that “code quality doesn’t matter because only agents read it.”

Use AI to move faster. Ship more. Improve your products. Let it speed up development and raise the bar.

But make sure you understand the code and can stand behind its quality.

If only an agent can read and modify your codebase, you’ve outsourced ownership of your product. Many of us already depend on big platforms. Don’t add another layer of fragility.

Adapt. Just don’t give up control.

“Apple would never have a screen in a screen”, says the CEO of Rivian… yet just a year ago, iPhone Mirroring – which puts your iPhone screen inside your Mac screen – was a major new feature of Mac OS. And widely liked too, for a reason: sometimes the thing you want just happens to be on your phone. No matter how much car companies want to trick themselves into thinking they can build in the apps and services to cater for *all* their customers, they simply can’t.

Your regular reminder that RSS never went anywhere, and if you miss the good old days of RSS, buddy you're still in them!

"We are so hungry for conflict that we turn something as boring as Wikipedia into a part of the culture war." If you saw that clip of Jimmy Wales walking out of an interview, or just care at all about Wikipedia, @hankgreen provides some useful context. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zi0ogvPfCA
