I don't know why, but I really like epigraphs in scientific articles.  For example, I think these are wonderful words for a work on student success:

โ€œYou keep asking why your work isn't enough, and I don't know how to answer that, because it is enough to exist in the world and just marvel at it. You don't need to justify that, or earn it. You are allowed to just live.โ€

-A Psalm for the Wild Built (Chambers, 2021).

Kyiv was under attack again this morning. ๐Ÿ’” A couple stands before the shattered remains of their home. Their son is still buried beneath the rubble.

So, dear Europeans, when your Russian visiting professors complain they are also victims โ€” because they couldnโ€™t fly from Berlin to Moscow to celebrate โ€œMay 9thโ€ โ€” remember this image.

There is a chasm between hypocrisy and terror.

@alihan_banan This statement is an oversimplification and somewhat misleading. The study highlights distinct systemic strategies in ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ & ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต for cultivating scientific elites, rather than merely contrasting external support with internal development. China employs a diversified and policy-driven model aimed at accelerating talent growth, while Japan relies on a more stable, institutionally coherent pathway with a strong emphasis on academic continuity.

A deep dive into the careers of 1647 Chinese ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ and 75 Japanese ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต academicians (1994โ€“2019) reveals two distinct models of scientific excellence: one rooted in continuity & tradition, the other in rapid development & institutional diversity:

In #Japan, becoming an academician doesn't require studying abroad - yet it often leads to #Nobel Prizes. In #China, the path is faster, younger, n fuelled by state-driven talent policies.

โ€œItโ€™s mine, my own, my precious!โ€ Turns out Gollum isnโ€™t just a character from Tolkien  โ€” he lives in academia too. A global study finds that 44% of ecologists & conservation scientists have faced territorial behaviour: data hoarding, blocked access, stolen ideas.

Itโ€™s called the Gollum Effect โ€” and itโ€™s pushing early-career & marginalized researchers out of science.

My new article in ๐Ÿ“˜ Journal of Contemporary Central and Eastern Europe reviews academic uses of ruscism โ€“ not just rhetoric, but a way for Ukrainian scholars to name & understand Russiaโ€™s ideology of aggression.

 https://doi.org/10.1080/25739638.2025.2515076

This is about the intellectual front โ€“ the struggle to build Ukraineโ€™s own epistemology of war, one that captures not only the effects but the origins of evil.

๐Ÿš€ The #INNBI project keeps gaining momentum โ€” our third meeting just wrapped up with energy and shared purpose!

Partners from ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฒ ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ช ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฉ ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช are working together to move open science, high-quality metadata, and responsible bibliometrics forward โ€” grounded in national contexts, but globally connected.

Together, weโ€™re building a future where research infrastructures are open, interoperable, and inclusive.

Academics arenโ€™t just choosing between home and office - theyโ€™re navigating spatial trade-offs shaped by discipline, task, and infrastructure. A massive study (7,800+ ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น researchers) finds that access to labs pulls natural scientists to campus, while writers and analysts thrive at home - if conditions allow.

A must-read for universities rethinking space in a post-pandemic, war world:

 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.respol.2025.105269

Itโ€™s not about laziness vs discipline. Itโ€™s about spatial fit.

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ This is how soft-power propaganda operates: through "objective" scientometric data, strategically framed to normalize the aggressor and obscure the voices of the oppressed. It is subtle โ€” but no less dangerous. Shame on #ISSI2025 for platforming this.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ And most revealing: no word about Ukrainian researchers.

Not even in passing. As if we do not exist.

The erasure is not neutral โ€” it is structural!
