The role of federal authorities continues to be the targeting of various social justice movements throughout the country. From the “Green Scare” to the arrests of environmental and animal rights activists to prosecutors withholding evidence against six Inauguration Day protesters in 2017 in an attempt to secure convictions, ignoring the precarious nature of these loose classifications can further harm already marginalized groups in the United States. https://unicornriot.ninja/2023/fbi-labels-anti-fascists-and-anti-racists-as-violent-extremists/
FBI Labels Anti-Fascists and Anti-Racists as Violent Extremists - UNICORN RIOT

A recently released Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) document titled “Domestic Terrorism Symbols Guide”* links common protest symbols to “terrorism” — another marker in a common theme of conflating militant protest for social justice with deadly terrorist violence within the United States. Groups like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Brennan Center have raised […]

UNICORN RIOT

@RickiTarr I never mock people for mispronunciations - I just assume they're well-read and awkward, like me.

I often mispronounce words. Epitome is a classic one that I'm guilty of, until I was 13.

If homegirl can be brave and do eet, so can I. (Yes, @MariaTheMartian I'm following you over here, but in the "I wanna be on the same bus" sense, I hope.)

I love Firefish, but I didn't know what to do. Firefish.social was in the last couple of months riddled with errors on everything I'd do, and sending issues across posts didn't seem alright to either of the two admins.

I know this is the new frontier and scientific progress goes "spoink", but I'm not techie enough to make an account to 4-6 tools to eventually fill out a form for something that is likely used once that might be ignored. Whoever JSON is, he must be making Kainoa very, very mad. Quit causing errors!
🤬 ( It's not that I think I'm too dumb to do it, I don't want to bother busy people where folks closer to the problem have a better grasp of it than I do.)

Maybe more tech types should be using Firefish.social like a Beta server so they can have the feedback they need to fix stuff, and us fans can ride the wave on smaller instances, I think.

I hope I got it right? In any case, I didn't make the Neovibe account for nothing, Firefish has big updates and needs downtime, so I'll use it for sure.

My old-ish review of/comments on "Walkaway" by @pluralistic

tl;dr: "As for the very notion of “walkaway”, the notion that people can start leaving our present society behind, I love it! I also love the idea that the future we get is the future we decide to build.

Given that one of the book’s main characters is Brazilian, I’d have loved to see refences to Brazil’s many actual walkaway communities – indigenous communities, century-old quilombos (maroon societies) etc."

and in smashing good #freshwater news

"Engineers designed a solar #desalination system that passively turns seawater into drinking water. It circulates water in swirling eddies which drives water to evaporate and leave salt behind. The resulting water vapor can be condensed and collected while the leftover salt circulates out of the device.

A small suitcase-sized system could produce up to 6 litres of #drinking #water per hour and last several years."

Desalination system could produce freshwater that is cheaper than tap water

A new solar desalination system takes in saltwater and heats it with natural sunlight. The system flushes out accumulated salt, so replacement parts aren’t needed often, meaning the system could potentially produce drinking water that is cheaper than tap water.

Anyway, I posted all that in response to yet another "I can't believe how stupid these people are" thread reacting to a mainstream media article that talks about Bluesky and Mastodon and finds Mastodon wanting.

I *agree* with you that this is better; but I think you all have a MASSIVE blind spot for what the ACTUAL problem is when "Very Serious People" join this federation of servers.

It doesn't work like they think it's supposed to work cause it's IRC, not Twitter.

(PS: this story DID have a happy ending. My friend even felt a little silly once I explained it was "just some guy." But that's the thing right? Nothing about that is clear out here - until very recently, I treated EVERYONE out here as "just some guy" and that didn't work out for ME all that well either - it's just that I'm harder than a coffin nail, so even if you convinced me EVERYONE out here hated me, I wouldn't leave cause "fuck him, why should I be the one who has to change my name?")

This is an absolutely true story okay:

One of my friends DM'd me in TEARS a couple months ago, because she'd been blocked by a single user instance.

Like, some guy came into her mentions, and they got into an argument about whatever she was posting about and he made a big announcement of blocking her cause she's a bad person.

So now she's DMing me to say she's been banned and has no idea what to do - it was a single user instance that blocked her.

The disconnect is real.

@AnarchoNinaWrites """The perception, for a newcomer, is that EVERYONE in your mentions MIGHT be "important"."""

I find this so funny because I've been the opposite and keep being surprised every single time I find out someone is actually well-known for something they've done. Idk, I've mostly been in small niche spaces, so I am just used to treating everyone as being as unimportant as myself xD

Tbh I think that's a lot healthier though. We should be on even footing. It's also a lot more fun when I later find out I had a fun little chat with someone who was a bigshot. Or funnier yet, when I get followed by some bigshot who think I'm just as much of a bigshot as them because I treat them like anyone else xD
