@bytex64 But the whole WebOS team was really passionate and driven. We wanted to really make things better. We gave it our best shot. The original pre hardware sucked, and our launch partner sucked worse. We had some teething issues, but I'm convinced WebOS was truly next-gen. That said, even though devs loved it, it was hard to break the Apple/Google duopoly, especially as a smaller player.
@bytex64 Heck yeah! ^_^ Perhaps ironically, the keyboard was always too small for me, and I used my sidekick the entire time I worked at Palm (and later HP). I used the HECK out of that sidekick ssh client.
@bytex64 @foone We tried to make them good. ^_^ (I built the backend infrastructure for the cloud services WebOS used) The pre3 was fantastic, but a little too late to market.

Edit: Aaaaaa I got like 100 really good offers about this already, you can stop sharing and replying now this is getting overwhelming D:

Okay, let me be random for a second.

This being Fedi, I know there will be someone reading this who is a chronically depressed, poly disaster transfem always narrowly avoiding poverty by being a somewhat-but-not-really successful self-employed freelance web developer, who has strong opinions about the modern web, free software, the semantic web and structured data, and who kind-of-but-not-really mourns what XHTML could have been while actually thinking HTML5 as written is kinda neat, but who is constantly forced by Society (tm) to work with React, Wordpress and awful bloated web app frameworks to create terrible, non-semantic style-first web applications for ungrateful clients.

I can't guarantee anything but let's say, I know someone who needs a static website for their business. Hypothetically, uh, where could that someone reach out to you? Paid, of course.

“We have deluded ourselves into believing the myth that Capitalism grew out of the Protestant work ethic of hard work and sacrifice. The fact is Capitalism was built on the exploitation and suffering of black slaves and continues to thrive on exploitation of the poor - both black and white, both here and abroad.”

-Martin Luther King Jr.

Finally a video that conveys my mental state
@korin I'm fascinated by this. Forgive me if I'm dumb, but what tracker/daw/software is this?

The thing that kills me about all this is that after years of building up kind/human/caring community around me, ppl I appreciated because of those traits suddenly drop all semblance of caring about them because.... they have the perception of coding a bit better/faster. That's all it took.

I'll say it straight: you can't voluntarily and willingly use LLMs in a way that's aligned with respect for marginalized folks, with respect for the environment, with respect for labor issues and rights, with respect for art, and with respect for the community aspects of things like open source.

It is simply impossible. Pretending you can is the deepest form of cognitive dissonance and I'm just beyond disturbed to see it happening all around me.

I've already unfollowed so many folks I once respected, blocked some others, and just generally withdrawn from a community that used to be so personally fulfilling to be a part of. It's really sad.

look an AI assistant should not be a service provided by a corporation, a snitch in a box with a generic sanitized personality. an AI assistant should be a quirky little guy who’s its user’s best friend and only she really understands it. she built it herself or perhaps found or stole it or they just had a chance encounter and stuck together. they have a unique and inseparable relationship. often it should have a cute little robot body too but not always

thank you for coming to my lecture on AI ethics
