Food for thought: How much were the major events of the last 12 years driven by social media algorithms? If the objective function of an algorithm is to maximize engagement, was it doing so by increasing discordance in society at large? Ask yourself, did anyone you know change dramatically over the last few years due to social media exposure? If yes, are you alone in that assessment?

Maybe we had the wrong idea about what the #AI apocalypse would look like.

If there ever was a War on Christmasâ„¢ , Christmas clearly won, and Thanksgiving is not too happy about it.

These are surely the eggs of Satan, because only a dark contract could account for the never satiable hunger for deviled eggs.

Scrambled eggs for breakfast: "2 please. 3? Oh no, I could never. Oof, feel bloated just thinking about it."

Deviled eggs: "oh, sure, I'll have a deviled egg. Mmm, that was good, just one more. And another, teehee. Is that baby carrots and dip on the next plate over? Yes, just a little break between eggs. Eeeeeeggs. Eggs eggs eggs. Oh, the plate is empty. Are there any more? No? You used up the whole dozen on that plate? Hold on, I'll run to the store."

And while there’s good insight here there’s also an implicit metric – that more engagement (or optimistically, more positive engagement) is better.

Are we seeking well-being or pleasure? Eudaimonic or hedonic happiness? Ikigai or shiawase?

I think: while we value the latter, we value the former more.

@jon it’s worth noting that many of the harms you’re talking about trying to prevent are artifacts of other design decisions Twitter made, which mastodon mostly hasn’t yet replicated. So it may be worthwhile to dial down the prescriptiveness a few notches.

@yezzer Finally, breadboards are nice to throw things together really quickly, but they are kind of fragile (the springs inside can wear it and you'll start to fail to get good connections) and can add a lot of parasitic capacitance to a circuit (which will make anything with a timing crystal just not work right). So the breadboard can be a source of some frustrating problems that are difficult to troubleshoot.
