Trump is now sending notes to online meme producers to make bullshit content and spread it across corporate social media (including #meta properties):

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/13/us/politics/trump-meme-trolls-2024.html

It doesn't have to be true, it just has to go viral -- that's the logic.

A quick reminder that @seanlawson and I describe these processes at length in our book Social Engineering (https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262543453/)

Inside the Troll Army Waging Trump’s Online Campaign

A team of meme-makers has been flooding social media with pro-Trump posts riddled with sexist and racist tropes. Donald Trump is cheering them on.

A *lot* of #AoIR2023 participants are talking about #disinformation and #misinformation.

May I humbly suggest my latest book, co-authored with @seanlawson: Social Engineering (MIT Press 2022)?

Wherein Sean and I use hacker social engineering -- a very effective form of manipulative communication -- to look back over the history of #propaganda and forward to the current, algorithmic form of disinformation we call "masspersonal social engineering"

I have a piece in MacLean's about #AI, #SocialMedia (specifically corporate social media), #politics, and #disinformation.

https://macleans.ca/society/technology/ai-political-polarization/

It's an "as told by" article where I was interviewed by Jadine Ngan.

Political deepfakes will spread confusion and misinformation - Macleans.ca

The more confusion these deepfakes sow, the more people will accuse each other of faking everything. You’re not going to believe what you see. You’re going to disbelieve what you don’t like.

I log my daily words every day. Some days I can't get to it, but I try to average 400 words per weekday. I've found that this amount will eventually produce a book every couple years, so it works. (Whether or not the words are good words is another matter).

In The Conversation, @seanlawson and I parse AI manipulative communication. We draw on the concepts from our book, Social Engineering, to do so:

Chatbots can be used to create manipulative content — understanding how this works can help address it

Artificial intelligence could be used to generate content intended to manipulate people. Addressing this problem means understanding how communication works to influence people.

Back in September, I was honored that the Edna Anderson-Taylor Communication Institute at the University of Utah, for which I am the Director, hosted a talk by the great @emmalbriant. If you were unable to attend in person, have no fear. You can check out "Mercenaries of Deceit: Understanding Propaganda and Digital Dark Arts" on our YouTube channel!

Better late than never, here's my run-down of the war over the Russia-Ukraine Cyberwar last week.

This is my (roughly) weekly summary of coverage touching on expectations for the war and observed effects, possible reasons for success and failure, the role of Western assistance to Ukraine, information and influence operations, newly reported cyber operations, and predictions of what comes next and lessons learned.

This week's newsletter is a whopping 3,089 words. You can find it here:

Oh boy oh boy oh boy!! A new Microsoft content marketing blog post (ahem, I mean “cyber threat intelligence”) post dropped today! Now with more footnotes! And also apparently all online propaganda is now a “cyber-enabled information operation.”

Since February, I have been keeping track of the role of cyber warfare in the Russia-Ukraine war. I have also been keeping track of the public debate about the role of cyber warfare, what I like to call "the cyberwar war." This is the first of what I hope will be a weekly post detailing what I’ve uncovered about expectations and effects in the ongoing cyber and information/influence components of the war, reasons posited for successes and failures, recently revealed operations, and expectations for the future of cyber and information/influence operations in the current war and beyond.
