Icelandic tourism industry in shambles after aurora borealis is released to public for free #Aurora #AuroraBorealis #Iceland
I've been to Iceland several times, Greenland twice. Not a sign of the Northern Lights. Today, I can see them from my house which is in suburban Belfast!

Tech bros love to boast about moving fast and breaking things, so it comes as some relief to find an instance where they've moved at a more stately 17 knots and yet still utterly fucked it.

In this case the "it" being carpool vehicles. Programmed to treat movement without the engine being switched on as either theft or witchcraft, they instantly bricked themselves in response.

What happened when these vehicles travelled by ferry was perhaps predictable...

Just found out from a friend who has moved Mastodon instances, that my instance is blocked on his one. Also have noticed that my timeline is quieter than it used to be.

One of this weekend's tasks might be to choose a new instance and migrate. This sounds like a task that I will spend a lot of time overthinking!

I have a proposal:
Whenever some company insists on calling a piece of equipment or software "smart", let's call it "needy" instead.

- needs wifi
- needs bluetooth
- needs update
- needs cookies
- needs access
- needs account
- needs login

I want dumb stuff that works.

Have just seen a company charge thousands of dollars for a Pentest and vulnerability scan report which has revealed less than I found using a free open source tool...

Here's a brilliant neologism: "slop", for text generated entirely by LLMs and published, unwanted, on the Internet

> Watching in real time as "slop" becomes a term of art. the way that "spam" became the term for unwanted emails, "slop" is going in the dictionary as the term for unwanted AI generated content

I’ll just be over here, watching this video on endless repeat and giggling uncontrollably…

One for fellow software devs out there.

I thought 'Oh, a silly grammar cock-up that makes for a fun local news story'. Then I read the first line. I won't spoil the surprise but maybe make sure there's no-one close when you yell 'OH FOR FU...'
