C’mon, seriously? I might expect this kind of jingoistic nonsense from the Brexit tabloids, but The Guardian?
The European Space Agency owned & operated Aeolus mission was funded by many ESA member states & built by the European company Airbus Defence & Space, registered HQ in Leiden, management in Toulouse.
Yes, ADS UK in Stevenage was the prime & the satellite was integrated there, but parts of Aeolus also came from ADS sites in France & Germany.
Sheesh … 🙄

Some very sad news via @sarahkendrew about the recent passing of Martyn Wells, optical engineer at the UK Astronomical Technology Centre in Edinburgh.
Among many other projects, Martyn was responsible for the superb optical design of the mid-infrared imager & spectrometer, MIRI, on the NASA/ESA/CSA JWST.
Here’s the way he figured how to do integral field spectroscopy with MIRI – truly brilliant.
Thank you, Martyn; ad astra ✨
Remember that nonsense from Pamela Paul in the New York Times about how science must no longer be a meritocracy because PNAS rejected a (very poor) paper titled "In defense of merit in science"?
No? That's ok. It wasn't memorable.
In any case, my letter to editor at the Times about that nonsense was just published.
The closest-ever look at #planet Gliese 1214 b.
Because of its short orbital period and relative proximity to Earth, GJ 1214 b has been studied frequently. But astronomers have had no luck in investigating its #atmosphere due to a blanket of thick clouds and hazes.
However, #JWST’s infrared capabilities allow researchers to penetrate previously opaque objects.
