Some very sad news via @sarahkendrew about the recent passing of Martyn Wells, optical engineer at the UK Astronomical Technology Centre in Edinburgh.

Among many other projects, Martyn was responsible for the superb optical design of the mid-infrared imager & spectrometer, MIRI, on the NASA/ESA/CSA JWST.

Here’s the way he figured how to do integral field spectroscopy with MIRI – truly brilliant.
