Check Me Out on Substack!

For various reasons, it’s time for me to retire this blog. However, fear not! I’m over on Substack as S. M. Feir, where I run a publication called Think on These Things. If you subscribe to Think on These Things, which is free to do, you will automatically be subscribed to Wonder-woven, my poetry podcast. If you just want Wonder-woven, you can subscribe via your podcast app as well. I’m having fun over on Substack, rediscovering my blogging self of circa 2002. So, come on over! Hey all. I finally decided to change servers. This is likely the final post you'll see from this account. Check me out at @smfeir
#books I just finished #Patriot by #AlexeiNavalny and it was brilliant! I was left in profound sadness at the state of Russia and the world, and at the loss of someone who seemed like he would have been fun to know on a personal level as well as being politically just amazing in terms of his ability to bring people together. Such a clearly creative and driven guy!
@gtbray Oh wow! I never actually learned how to use a reel-to-reel player. They always fasinated me though.
@gtbray Ah RFB! I still have nightmares about the music history book I had to use from them in my last years of high school. I made the mistake of waiting the whole summer before starting to read it and tried to cram it all into a Labour Day weekend!
@Bruce Well, I think we all do it, at least those of us with a sarcastic turn of mind. But yes, it's a good thing to think about especially in a written medium.
@Bruce @techsinger @gtbray @bmoore123 @mcourcel Well, technically, you can be a Canadian citizen and not believe in Canada. There are no loyalty tests as yet. As for being a Christian, using that label to represent yourself as a charitable person without having some connection to the risen Christ is not precise, but quite understandable. And who knows? That lawyer could be nearer to The Kingdom than someone like me, who claims to be a member of the body of Christ.
@gtbray And he could have been an adjunct too. One never knows. I just love hearing stories about really good profs who actually understand how to teach and to encourage students. That's the kind of prof I wanted to be when I thought of doing my PH.D.
@gtbray Do you remember the prof's name?
@gtbray @Bruce @bmoore123 @mcourcel Yeah. Just because you studied English, by which I primarily mean English Literature, is no guarantee of good spelling. However, studying the history of the English language also basically tells you that spelling has developed over time in a quite arbitrary way. You could, for example, spell "fish" as "P H O T I" and it could still sound like "fish."
