In all this talk about whether AT protocol will "beat" ActivityPub, I just remembered something...
Jack Dorsey rarely hangs out on Bluesky! He prefers Nostr!

Now as far as whether ActivityPub, AT, or Nostr will win...
I think the first protocol to demonstrate server app diversity will be the one.
ActivityPub is winning. Quite drastically. 121 projects use ActivityPub spread across 24,618 nodes.
Right now, that seems like an insurmountable advantage.

Thereās a lot of talk about the harm social media does to society, but Iād argue that mainstream media is a FAR larger problem.
Fox News may be the biggest example, but thereās a rot in the entire news media complex and as usual it comes down to money. Journalism has increasingly been replaced with ānarrativesā and both-sides rhetoric, chasing after clicks and views and advertising dollars.
This is how fascism takes root in the 21st century, through late stage capitalism.
they: you are so smart and resolved my IT issue.
me:
Media are calling the Fediverse a failure because they want it to failāand they believe if they repeat the same narrative, it will some day come true.
But they were wrong about the Internet in 1995 when they called it a novelty.
They were wrong about social media in 2008 when they called it a fad.
They are wrong about the Fediverse today.
11 million people are here now.
12 million people will likely be here next month.
Most startups wish they could āfailā like we do!
People talk about ChatGPT being inaccurate, and thatās true.
But is it that more inaccurate than all those bad journalists who just make stuff up? Because believe me, Iāve seen so many articles where fact checkers are asleep at the wheel!
You know why ChatGPT is taking over? Because too many publications no longer give a damn about facts.
Ah now I know what Mastodon need is... Quote tweet.
One final thought.
The conceit amongst social media incumbents is that the Fediverse has no customers.
But this perception happens because the Fediverse's current customers are perceived as "low value".
They're deemed so low value that people don't even acknowledge they exist š
One thing I will say about decentralized social media is that we don't know where it will end up.
For example, when the first smartphones came out, they came with physical QWERTY keyboards. Now they're input with touchscreens.
Right now, decentralized social networks look like Twitter duplicated across multiple servers. But it will evolve into something substantially different in time.
