Media are calling the Fediverse a failure because they want it to fail—and they believe if they repeat the same narrative, it will some day come true.

But they were wrong about the Internet in 1995 when they called it a novelty.

They were wrong about social media in 2008 when they called it a fad.

They are wrong about the Fediverse today.

11 million people are here now.

12 million people will likely be here next month.

Most startups wish they could “fail” like we do!

@atomicpoet

it's the 90s again baby! #ccmusic is the new indie/alternative music. we're coming for your children.

@atomicpoet what's actually happening is they haven't figured out how it's going to be monetized by a controlling party yet, and cannot conceive it surviving without.
@el @atomicpoet Every month on the dot an article announces RSS is dead, yet I still get all my news from RSS, no? :D

@el
I'm old & cynical enough to believe that will actually happen, regardless of what architectures we create to circumvent or inhibit it.
That said, I'm also absolutely certain that trying to circumvent/inhibit is very important & not wasted. We'll probably never defeat the monster, but we might keep it from being able to eat us.

@atomicpoet

@atomicpoet Once Fediverse has implemented the majority of its features, it can optimize the user experience to encourage widespread adoption!
@atomicpoet the "failure" they speak of is a failure of finding a way to monetize it. To sell it to advertisers or profiteer effectively on it. The fediverse seems like it's good at enabling corroboration and connections on a small scale with tons of little circles of people that gravitate and find eachother. This isn't useful when you are a corpo trying operate on millions of dollars scale but it is to an individual.
At least that's how I feel right now.
@atomicpoet @atomicpoet @atomicpoet curious where this is being said.

I understand how journalists fabricate narratives.Curious who is doing it and where.
@atomicpoet fuck the media… and yes, I know that’s a lot of sex

@atomicpoet

To paraphrase Pirates of the Caribbean

'You are without doubt, the worse social media I have ever heard of'

'Ah, but you have heard of us'

If the media are willing to praise or damm us, it's because we are newsworthy.

They are on an endless treadmill of having to invent something new to say everyday. So sometimes it will be good, sometimes bad,
but which one is relatively random.

#Fediverse

@atomicpoet a new definition for failure?
@atomicpoet Media are talking about the fediverse?
@dannyman Do a Google News search on it.

@atomicpoet

Yeah a real tsunami of slander.

@dannyman @atomicpoet absolutely. they almost all follow the form of:

'[fediverse] is no true scottsman because [...] and has failed. If only some plucky young entrepreneur could do better. Until then we have no choice but the status quo'
