A presentation of the book Socrates the Skinhead: The Life of a Russian Antifascist will take place on May 12, 12.00 CET in the form of Zoom event, it will be held within Manheim Anarchist Bookfair.

Access the presentation here https://buchmesse.anarchie-mannheim.de/programm/veranstaltung/socrates-the-skinhead-the-life-of-a-russian-antifascist

This newly printed publication is a collection of memoirs about Aleksei Sutuga, a Russian anti-fascist and anarchist. Together with materials from his interviews and prison recollections, it presents a comprehensive chronicle of the most active period in the history of the anti-fascist movement in Russia.

Unfortunately, the Russian state has monopolized anti-fascism and has engaged in the murder of the inhabitants of Ukraine. However, there once was a different kind of anti-fascism that resulted in death, prison, and emigration for its participants. The editor of the Russian-language edition of the book will discuss what the contemporary anti-war and anti-fascist movements can learn from the experience of Russian anti-fascists. We will also explore the importance of recording and researching recent history.

Aleksei Sutuga, aka Socrates, was an anarchist and anti-fascist. He played a key role in founding the anarchist organization Autonomous Action. He participated in the Teatr.Doc performances about torture applied to anarchists in prison. He was prosecuted and recognized as a political prisoner. Socrates passed away on 1 September 2020, due to injuries sustained in a fight unrelated to politics.

This event is going to happen online on Zoom in English.

We, Too, Remember Aleksei Sutuga: The Life of a Russian Anarchist and Anti-Fascist

Aleksei Sutuga grew up deep in Siberia, in Irkutsk—the city to which Mikhail Bakunin was once exiled, not to mention many other Russian rebels. Known to his friends as Socrates, Aleksei became involved in the Russian anarchist and anti-fascist movements. His life is the subject of a recently published book.

The interviewees recount how anarchism reemerged in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Sharing their memories of Socrates, they explore the relationship between hardcore punk, straight edge, veganism, anarchism, anti-fascism, and a variety of other forms of activism. They describe how Socrates and his comrades became locked in a brutal conflict—first with neo-Nazis, then with the Russian authorities.

At the invitation of our Russian comrades, we have contributed an introduction to this book, exploring why his story is important for people outside Russia.

Our movements in post-Soviet countries, once closely connected, are tiny. Every activist that drops out makes a difference. Even more so when they die or end up in prison for years.

The movements have been confronted for decades by the far right or authoritarian states, fed by the imperialist Big Brother.

It is really a life of death situation now on all fronts, directly affecting the anti-authoritarian futures in our region.

To understand at least part of the context, read the book Socrates the Skinhead, https://linktr.ee/rtpbooks

Dmitrii Ecolog Petrov (a pioneer of insurrectionist anarchism in Russia, killed in Ukraine)

A portrait of Sutuga wouldn’t be complete without including his anarchist beliefs. He was one of few people who had a deep understanding of anarchist ideas while also consciously and sincerely believing in them. He truly believed that the state and capitalism had supplanted personal autonomy and cooperation between equals. Sutuga’s anarchism wasn’t some fanciful intellectual construct. Truthfully, it was simple and understandable, and it seamlessly intertwined with his open and charming personality.

Housefather (anarchist in exile)

My memories of Sutuga in the 2000s are like a shifting kaleidoscope. There we are sticking up anarchist leaflets in the freezing cold, then there’s him with a knuckle-duster. There we are carrying copies of magazines somewhere, and then we’re sneaking up behind some vendor selling neo-Nazi rags. There’s us on a train to play a concert with many hours of pine forest out the window. I came across a film about the black metal group Burzum. We lived and worked to the same beat, though we attacked boneheads instead of unlucky Norwegian churches.

Ilia Shakurskii (political prisoner, in prison until 2033)

Sutuga is gone. Despite how much he went through, he was not broken. He remained who he was, a good strong person who simply didn’t know how to surrender. He will always remain who he was. He will live forever in our hearts, and our hearts will never fade. Whoever lives an honorable life will leave that life a hero.

Piotr Riabov (PhD, associate professor)

Sokrates took a serious interest in the history and philosophy of anarchism and studied incessantly throughout his life. Anarchism, ardently embraced as a personal philosophy in his youth, was not just a pretty word or trendy tattoo (although there were tattoos, too).

Sergei Vilkov (journalist)

Sutuga was both a soldier and a general on the front lines, that place where there was no difference between the two. He was a soldier, yet he also became an idol, his face fluttering on the flags of our youth and hopes. The violence you take part in, or that you fight against, will end up following you your entire life, and could strike on any given day. He didn’t hide, because that man, that pebble that was a rock, didn’t know how to run away.

Egor Skovoroda (journalist in exile)
I think I first heard about him in the summer of 2007 after the attack on the eco-camp in Angarsk when the Nazis killed anti-rasist. Of course, Socrates, one of the most active anarchists in Irkutsk, was at that camp. From time to time after that, I found mention of him on different neo-Nazi sites which collected information about the antifascists.

The Russian state hijacked antifascism and claims to be waging a war against neo-Nazis in Ukraine. What about the real antifascists who tried to change things in Russia? Some are in graves, prisons, and exile. Others took arms to fight the Russian state on the Ukrainian side.

The book Socrates the Skinhead: The Life of a Russian Antifascist will lead you thru the story of Socrates, a prominent activist who died in 2020 and never wanted to leave Russia. His life is an artifact of the life of the entire antifascist and anarchist movement.

CrimethInc. ex-Worker's Collective @CrimethInc wrote the introduction to the book Socrates the Skinhead: The Story of a Russian Antifascist. Their text draws attention to the harsh reality of state tyranny and the far right that defends it prevailing all over the world, not just in "undemocratic" Russia or in whatever other country seen as inferior or antagonistic to the Western civilization.

The book also teaches us to build bridges between generations, across borders and activisms. Read the full intro https://linktr.ee/rtpbooks

Curious about what happened to Russian Antifa?

Ever heard of street wars with neo-Nazis in Russia in 2010s?
Multiple armed far-right groups operating there with the support of the state officials and cops.
Multiple murdered and imprisoned antifascists and anarchists.
Powerful mix of subculture and politics.
A deadly mix for many.
Including for Socrates, a zealous anarchist and antifascist, a key figure of his generation who died in a street fight in 2020.
