Did a complete overhaul of the user interface. I think it's better.

I build a quick&dirty app that shows a status update with coordinates and one photo on a map.

First thing people say is: "aren't there apps for this?"

Of course.

"So why make it?"

Because hands-on creation gives me a deeper understanding of development and UI/UX.

It’s like climbing a mountain versus taking the lift. The view is the same at the top, but the experience is a thousand times richer when you go up on foot.

Today, I chose experience.

A couch-while-binching-experiment

A simple editor for quickly scaffolding maplibre stylejsons.

Topic #1: Addresses

People can place an order for Christmas cards on https://jannekeschot.nl. Orders need to be shipped, and shipping requires an address.

I have connected the address input field to the Dutch public location service. It's an API with suggest and lookup endpoints. I use those to suggest addresses as the user types, and to get a valid address object with coordinates.

I really like this approach as it simplifies the process of acquiring a valid address for me, and the user

The exploring continues, decided to plot the with #maplibre using #pmtiles and some extrusion based on the unique activity count per hexagon.

Pretty awesome. Finding the right color palette is difficult though. Anyone any online resources with some background info about that?

Looks a bit like all streets

Plotted 4.5 million points of my Strava activity in a specific country.

Without any contextual information, I guess it's not that hard to guess the country?

It fascinates me every time I see it. The Dutch government has an official geodataset which includes all trees in the country.

Here is an update on what I'm working on. #buildinpublic

I'm exploring auto styling #OGC Vectortiles in #mapstyler. In this example, the population density is styled based on a user defined color. Very happy with these first results.

I'm just not sure about the map readability of this implementation. The coloring scheme is of course dependent on the distribution of the data. So I guess additional options for categorization of the data are needed.

A new version of https://mapstyler.com is available! New features are amongst other:

- Applying data filters
- Styling based on data filters
- Beta support for OGC Vector Tiles
