What would/could a workplace look like if we designed it for the 85% - instead of designing it to guard against the few bad apples?
I thought of this idea while sitting through monotonous mandated training on harassment and security videos. Security - send the new employee the dummy phishing emails. If they fail to identify, then they have to do the training. Harassment - start with the questionnaire. If they fail, then they have to do the training.

Historically we’ve adopted this idea that people need to be managed, which is reinforced by business books... But I believe, deep in my heart, that people don’t like to be managed.
Can we please ditch the term Individual Contributor? (I hate it.) What about Individual Collaborator instead? I’d be OK with that.
Then managers could be Individual Commanders.
Ditch the annual review (in place for continual peer reviews).
Ditch bonuses.

I think Blackberry (RIM) died because of being a visionary-led company that did not have #innovation baked into the system. A single point of failure brought down the company.
Interesting that at Apple, jobs didn't want Apple to produce a phone. Lucky for Apple he was eventually convinced.
P.S. Another great book recommendation #ModernProductManagement
I am also no fan of “human resources.”
Nor "Individual Contributor".
Nor "Leaders" when talking about positional authority only.
Words and language matter. Think.
Mediocrity is expensive - and #autonomy can be the antidote.
#FaSTAgile - untether work, untether your people, untether #innovation!
