πŸ’‘ Scalable architectures, two concepts: π™Žπ™˜π™–π™‘π™š-𝙐π™₯ 𝙖𝙣𝙙 π™Žπ™˜π™–π™‘π™š-π™Šπ™ͺ𝙩

But when to use one over the other?

In this blog post, our very own @noctarius2k, wrote about the pros and cons of each of the approaches. Simplicity and limited scalability vs complexity and higher scalability.

He also explains how simplyblock is implemented and why we did what we did πŸ”₯

Securing #kubernetes is hard. Especially when you need to provide quick environments to your developers. That's why @ams0 is working hard on #kubespaces, and Namespace-as-a-Service.

In this week's episode of our Cloud Commute podcast, we talk about Kubespaces and how it'll will solve the needs of developers.

The full episode can be found at https://youtu.be/5Y8XBTGSSig or your favorite podcast platform.

Running on a single cloud provider isn't the future. If you want truly fault tolerant services, there is no way around multi-cloud. Oracle realized this a long time ago, Gerald explains today's issues of multi-cloud and how it has to change!

In this weeks episode of our Cloud Commute podcast host @noctarius2k talks to @gvenzl about the Oracle database and how Oracle moved from massive on-prem servers to the cloud.

Block Storage? Object Storage? File Storage? What is all this? Let us help you!

This week's blog post starts with explaining what exactly is Block Storage and why or when you want to use it (spoiler, it's extremely versatile 🀣).

https://www.simplyblock.io/post/what-is-block-storage

What is Block Storage?

Block storage describes a technology that controls how data is stored on storage devices. Data is split into chunks and stored in blocks.

NVMe is not just the M.2 SSD you put on your mainboard. NVMe is a whole ecosystem around the idea of implementing fast access to solid state drives, not only locally, but also remotely.

Learn all about NVMe that you should know, but never cared to ask. Simplyblock just published its newest blog post, explaining the NVMe technology, its use cases, and the reason why it was created in the first place to replace SCSI and SAS.

What is NVMe Storage?

Non-Volatile Memory Express is a modern protocol dedicated to flash based solid state NVMe storage for low latency and high performance.

Do you know SQL? Exactly!

Most databases and data processing tools support SQL for exactly that reason. And we see a strong movement for all of them to get closer to the standard, day by day.

In this weeks episode of the Cloud Commute podcast, our host @noctarius2k talks with @gunnarmorling from #Decodable about the benefits of #SQL, how #CDC (change data capture) works and why Decodable uses #ApacheFlink as the underlying technology for its #StreamProcessing offering.

How do you measure the performance of storage?

1️⃣ Run a benchmark! 🀯 (should be obvious but...)
2️⃣ Understand the read-write distribution of your system
3️⃣ Measure both, IOPS and Throughput
4️⃣ Measure IOPS at different block sizes
5️⃣ Use a benchmarking tool, such as fio (the flexible I/O tester)

What are your most important ones? What would you add? Let us know πŸ‘‡

Check out a deep dive into each of these terms in our latest blog post: https://www.simplyblock.io/post/storage-performance-metrics-iops-throughput-latency-explained

With Amazon EBS, AWS offers an easy and quick way to get block storage for your virtual machine (EC2) or Kubernetes / container (EKS) workloads. While simple to use, scaling those storage solutions will become a non-trivial cost factor (or complicated).

Simplyblock took on the challenge to bring cost-efficient, fast, and secure storage to the cloud.

Learn more about how simplyblock can be deployed, scaled, and used in our latest blog post.

#Java cannot be used to write high-performance applications such as databases? Wrong.

#QuestDB, a columnar time-series database, completely written in Java and deployed in Kubernetes can handle millions of inserts per second with ease.

We had Steven Sklar on our Cloud Commute podcast. He talks about how they implemented their cloud and how it is different from on-premise installations, due to special requirements in the cloud.
