Inline skating the mean streets of NYC since 1993 and still alive to kvetch about it.

During the day, webmaster for some scientists, Java netCDF dataviz and cartography coder.

Otherwise, a Jack Methodist, somewhere left of center and (sigh) a recovering Idahoan.

Plus various experiences and opinions of no merit.

I used to play the license plate game while #InlineSkating around #NYC. A jaunt to Coney Island & back was always good for at least 40 states. It's been a couple years since I was serious about it, but my eyes still scan cars as I or they pass by. So imagine my delight to catch two (2!) Idaho plates during a trip to Greenpoint today, one from Ada County and one from Jefferson, the latter practically next door to my hometown. Idaho plates are rare in the city; Montana plates are much easier.
Amazing weather on Thursday to go #InlineSkating in #NYC. A wind shell would not have gone amiss, but still, a great day. Looks like we'll get one more day of this, and then autumn will rudely start pounding on the door.
Out #InlineSkating in Columbia County NYS Sunday afternoon, and I literally wept with joy to discover that 5 miles of a rail-trail that were originally surfaced with stone dust 5 years ago had recently been upgraded to smooth asphalt. That means excellent rolling all 6.2 miles from the 9H crossing in Valatie up to the old depot in North Chatham. And after 3/4 miles on-road, there's another 3 miles of paved trail to Nassau. Woot!

When you chill out in #NYC, optimize your location.

Beautiful evening in #NYC, as it often is on 9/11.

Out #InlineSkating late Sunday night, and OMG, the combination of rolling #Manhattan #NYC avenues toward home after midnight whilst listening to a Dave Holland album I've never heard before ("Another Land", FWIW). The experience was close to perfect.

Now, I know, you need some good late-night urban skating music? Pick a small #jazz group with a damn good bass player.

Friday night just past 11 p.m., I was at first pleasantly surprised to see the #NYC Manhattan Br #BikeCounter reported > 6000 users today, which I hadn't seen previously this year. But then saw the annual total. WTF? I swear I passed by here in late August and estimated that it would be around Sep 15 before the counter reached 1 million. And yet the current total suggests that, no, that happened a week ago.

#NYCBike #BikeNYC people, please clue me in if you have been monitoring the counter.

I haven't received the first e-mail from E*Trade about dividends in months, possibly a couple years, but tonight I get… this.
Rolling around Central Park early Sunday evening closed out a big month of #InlineSkating: 826 miles, which was 95 more than my best ever previous month. And frankly, never again, unless I can get my average session distance back up so that I don't have to roll every damn day. Really been feeling the burn-out the last couple days.

If you were on the 7:22 Thursday evening from Brewster back to the city, the moaning sound you heard was coming from my ankles complaining about the 60-mile skate from the city to Brewster.

Theoretically, I might not go skating on Friday.
