@rbreich We haven't had two parties capable of governing for years. The only policy of the GOP has for years been to obstruct the ability to get anything done. If the GOP didn't exist we could get real policy debate between what are currently the progressive and moderate wings of the democrats. A strong GOP is a thing that is entirely unneeded and counterproductive.
Please do not ask me what I accomplished in 2022, I was not aware accomplishing anything was mandatory.
“Do not listen to powers that be who pretend that getting infected w/ COVID multiple times is now no big deal. They’re asking you to lower your guard for a nasty virus that can invade the brain, disregulate the immune system and damage the vascular system” https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2022/12/21/Ten-Downplayed-COVID-Facts/

We should be rallied to defend ourselves and our kids. Our leaders offer timid silence.

After the 1/6 insurrection, there was never a proper press conference by the DOJ to assuage public fears—and Merrick Garland is a reluctant communicator, adding to public uncertainty. The Jan 6 committee has played a critical role in keeping the country focused on this unprecedented crime and not letting the liars, the deniers and the emulators sweep it all under the rug.
This is absolutely insane. A mom was prevented from taking her daughter to a Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall because she works for a law firm litigating against the venue's parent company. They spotted her with facial recognition technology according to this report: https://www.nbcnewyork.com/investigations/face-recognition-tech-gets-girl-scout-mom-booted-from-rockettes-show-due-to-her-employer/4004677/

#JohnMastodon is proof that things *CAN* go viral here on Mastodon, but the key is that *YOU* are the algorithm. The reason that the John Mastodon meme showed up on other people's timelines is because so many users boosted the posts.

The lesson here is: please don't just favourite something if you really enjoyed it; BOOST it so that other people can enjoy it, too! This is the only reason why I bother to create as large a social graph as I can on Mastodon—to act as an amplifier. You can, too!❤️😉

When I was a kid, the phone company published massive lists of #AssasinationCoordinates.
@peter spot on. Responses like the ones from these outlets make it sound like it's utility infrastructure they've been denied access to. It's a social media platform with new management, and on top of that, a private company. Musk can (unfortunately) do whatever he wants to do with it, and be forced to deal with any legal consequences that comes from it.

Musk's suspension of tech journalists from Twitter is, on balance, the best thing that can happen right now. Not because it's a good idea, but because it's such a transcendentally stupid move.

It highlights the vile and capricious way the new CEO and part-owner has operated.

It highlights his contempt for freedom of expression, which he claims to revere.

And it will lead to an even more rapid exodus of people who want civility and usefulness online.

When I hear about the coup attempt in Germany & the desire of these violent extremists to insert Prince Heinrich XIII of Reuss as the leader after a planned execution of the German chancellor, it sounds ludicrous, laughable. But that's the thing: These people are deadly serious.

Because the plots of these anti-democratic extremists often seem so ludicrous, they can succeed because the public--& too many leaders--don't take them seriously enough. This tendency is how Trump got as far as he did.
