@bontchev @GossiTheDog If paying the ransom was illegal, the attacker would have to use another method to monetize their attack. It would be much harder to monetize; this would be a good thing.

They'd have to do an attack like change the account number on file so that future payments go to their own account, or use information from the breach to phish people.

@standupmaths There's a really interesting maths question in this video: https://youtu.be/e19i6KYhJ8o?si=AURrT6BSmT3rst42&t=630 What's the most efficient sequence so that all magnets connect at the right position, and no more than 1 ever connect at any other positions. What if you allow different polarities of connection?

@KydiaMusic This is what good government does with taxes. Until 1981, the top US tax rate was 70%. Silicon valley started and became world dominant in that period.
@chirper I'm getting a "Permission required" box every time I go to X, and when I hit "Continue" to open the permissions, it just closes and I no permissions open. This is on chrome on a new computer where I've imported Chrome settings by syncing with Google.
@lauren @lain_7 @datarama @ChuckMcManis Here's the results I got:
@TechConnectify Just don't pronounce it "ex". It's not a letter X, it's a multiplication sign (×) and it's pronounced "times". It's 2,400 times speed.
@nimphal @armstrong I don't think replacing a first name with an initial is a great idea - I used to live with 4 people with the same initial-surname combination. Also sometimes the first name is the family name. Are you sure that is the one you want to shorten?

I, for one, think we should still be measuring data transfer speeds in CD-ROM Xes.

Just moved some files from one drive to another at 2,400X speed!

@johnmu @danderson There's an absolutely fantastic web page about them: https://ciechanow.ski/mechanical-watch/

The state of identity verification in the UK:

1. "You need a utility bill with your full name and address".
2. Of course these are all online now, and even if you try to get paper ones for this very purpose the companies keep pushing you to online instead.
3. Go download a PDF of the bill.
4. "We cannot accept online bills, it must have been posted to your address"
5. Print out the PDF
6. Take a photo of it
7. Email it to them
