It is popularly claimed that long-term trends in national and international well-being are influenced by the widespread availability and use of the internet, social media, & smartphones. It's a worrying idea, but not supported by research.

In our new paper @matti and I analysed data from 2,414,294 individuals (15 years & up) across 168 countries from 2006 to 2021. We tracked eight kinds of well-being against three forms of technology.

"And yet, while some journalists have entirely cut ties with Twitter, a Tow Center analysis of approximately 4,000 journalists from 19 U.S. news outlets suggests that they are a small minority. Some are concerned that news media unintentionally make misinformation worse by repeating false claims while reporting on them, or as part of debunking, fact-checking, etc.

However, across ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง our panel survey found that news use increased people's awareness of false claims without increasing their belief in them.

In some cases news media use even weakened false belief acquisition.

Whatโ€™s the impact of news media and social media on misinformation?

Our panel survey in ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง shows that news helps people become more informed and sometimes more resilient to misinformation, while social media platforms have inconsistent effects.
