I finally translated my #ActivityPub tutorial to English: https://grishka.me/blog/activitypub-from-scratch/
(several people at this year's FOSDEM asked me about this)
This is a translation of the article I originally wrote in Russian a year ago. Lately, after Elon Musk bought Twitter, people have started looking for its alternatives – and many found one in Mastodon. Mastodon is a decentralized social media platform that works on the federation model, like email. The federation protocol is called ActivityPub and is a W3C standard, and Mastodon is far from being its only implementation, albeit it is the most popular one.
Indonesian bank CIMB Niaga rewrote some of their #Java micro services in #rustlang since they ran into perf bottlenecks with Java. The results
* 31x faster startup times
* 12x less CPU
* 500x less memory
That’s not really surprising – what’s more interesting is they say they have more confidence in the system’s stability (because whole classes of bugs are prevented at compile time like NullPointerExceptions)

There have been many films about the First World War, but only a few were made by those who actually fought in it.
One of these is "Wings" (1927). It entered the public domain last year, you can watch it on the Fediverse at:

There are no miniatures, no stock footage, no rear projection. All planes are real. In scenes where actors are visible, actors are flying the planes themselves.
Great piece on BlueSky and enshittification by @pluralistic. “I will never again devote my energies to building up an audience on a platform whose management can sever my relationship to that audience at will.”

Great piece on BlueSky and enshittification by Cory Doctorow. “I will never again devote my energies to building up an audience on a platform whose management can sever my relationship to that audience at will.” I also really appreciate his point that it’s not the blockchain venture capital that leads to enshittification, it’s the venture capital. Cory is a fellow POSSE-er (and major inspiration to me when I adopted the practice), and has opted not to use Bluesky. Personally, I’ve gone the route of using the platforms that interest me, even the enshittification-prone ones like Bluesky and Threads, but hedging my bets by plugging them into my POSSE system where they can just as easily be unplugged if need be.
To the FSF:
Remove Stallman. Replace the FSF board. Make the Free Software movement and culture safe for women to participate.
To Everyone:
Stop harboring assholes and start shouting down "reply guys". Make it clear to women that "Yes. You belong here" - not just with words but with actions. Take safety seriously. If you can't be kind to you fellow humans, then no amount of software will benefit the world, no matter its license.
