But until we address the extreme disparities in wealth and power that enabled nationalists to gain popularity, no mere election will suffice to stop fascism.

The outcome of the mid-term elections will be determined by what happens in the months ahead—not by how successfully politicians campaign, but rather by the extent to which grassroots resistance makes it impossible for the ruling class to imagine that Trump could continue to advance their interests.

In the long run, only profound social change can put an end to the cycle that has driven the growth of the far right. We must lay bare the connections between fascists, billionaires, militarists, Zionists and Christian nationalists, cryptocurrency hucksters, tech moguls, federal agencies like ICE and the police and sheriffs that abet them, and the centrists and Democrats who paved the way for the tragedies of the second Trump era by suppressing grassroots resistance at the conclusion of the first.

Ultimately, we must show how to defeat their program, not just vote against it.

The US labor movement was heavily driven by anarchism, from the Haymarket Martyrs to the IWW and beyond. It's hard to separate the resistance of the US labor movement from Propaganda of the Deed, which was an influential part of anarchist theory at the time.

People often say that Propaganda of the Deed didn't work, but would union members have physically resisted mine guards and Pinkertons without demonstrations of militancy within the milieu? The actual point of Propaganda of the Deed is to show that the elite aren't untouchable, that the people killing us bleed, that their castles are penetrable, and that these mortal men with their mortal means can in fact be resisted. The labor truce that liberals brokered with the New Deal came out of anarchist-informed radicals with a sense that their enemies weren't untouchable. Propaganda of the Deed can open these mental horizons, as long as we push to organize with the opportunities opened.

The Pakistani Prime Minister announced that the US, Iran, and their respective allies “agreed to an immediate ceasefire including Lebanon.” Without speaking directly with Iran, Trump promoted this as an offramp from the war.

Today, the Israeli military continues attacking Lebanon; in response, Iran continues to close the Strait of Hormuz.

It's hard to imagine a worse outcome for Trump. He has achieved none of his express objectives in Iran, neither regime change nor suppressing Iran's nuclear program.

He can no longer pretend to be a credible negotiating partner. Both his threat to target civilian infrastructure and his claim to have negotiated a ceasefire have been discredited. Neither the Iranian nor Israeli governments listen to him. He's forced into conflict with Netanyahu.

And the pressure on the economy continues.
