Heads-up, I've decided I'm gonna transfer my account to wetdry.world once the mstdn.party servers are stable enough to let me do that.

mstdn.party is cool, but it's been pretty much down all of today with seemingly no status updates given anywhere, and it's always been kinda slow for me even when it was working. Plus, wetdry.world just seems to fit my niches a little better.

The Integrity Verification feature ensures attackers are unable to alter the protected game code before startup or during gameplay, fortifying gaming studios against potential tampering threats. Its seamless integration capabilities and flexibility make it an invaluable asset for gaming studios, catering to various use cases where customers seek to protect their proprietary code.

This SUCKS! #Denuvo #DRM

It's crazy, though.

I think the real solution here would just be to actually standardize things. Standards are not bad! They just need to be sane, thought-out, and well-written.

4: "Just release a .deb package"

Yeah, alright.

Unironically, I think this is currently the best solution.

It'll natively work on Debian-based distros, ofc, and it can fairly easily be repackaged to work on anything else. It's not hard to make an AUR package that does this, for example.

3: "Just release a FlatPak"

Okay, that's sane advice!

Unfortunately, FlatPaks have a lot of issues. Controversial, I know, but I'm honestly not a fan of them.

The file size bloat, unnecessary containerization causing poor DE integration and breaking things, giving users a false sense of security, etc.

This is the future of Linux, really? And I thought Windows was bloated...

The "solutions" the Linux community recommends when you google this problem are all terrible!

Here's some actual advice I found:

1: "Just release a tarball"

We do want non-tech-savvy people to be able to use Linux too, right?

2: "Do nothing; let distro managers package your libraries/executables for you"

Are you kidding?! As if the Debian package maintainers are going to create a package for "HedgeLib" - my niche library/tooling for modding Sonic the Hedgehog games. Absolutely!

@hikari makes an excellent point about Linux binary compatibility with this post:

I love #Linux, but this is the biggest problem with it currently, imo.

As a developer, shipping a binary that works across all (or even most) distros is a major pain!

You'll notice many devs don't bother and tell you to just compile from source, or just don't release a Linux version at all.

port a game to GNU/Linux and it will run for a day; get the game running in WINE and it will run forever

Hey Mastodon!

You're supposed to make an #introduction post stuffed with a bunch of obnoxious hashtags like it's 2008, right?

I'm a #programmer (mostly #cpp #c and #csharp), #modder, #software #reverseengineer, and #sonicthehedgehog fan.

I do a lot of #reverseengineering (mostly of #sega games), and develop custom libraries/tools to mod them.

Also trying to learn #japanese cuz I'm a fucking #weeb

Follow me if you want to see code, modding, shenanigans, "the sonic", L takes, and trash memes.
