A (newbie) question: What are the possibilities, and problems, of the fediverse evolving into something like an open protocol version of WeChat - a universal social tool that combines messaging, social media, micropayments, and more? Are there any tech reasons why ActivityPub couldn't support these. And what would be the practical dangers (e.g. of federated micropayments)?

I've been waiting for someone to write about this properly for a while. It's especially prevalent when running your own Mastodon instance with no default fediblocks at all. Just rawdogging the fediverse. There really are so many instances that just post the most heinous shit imaginable 24/7. Luckily you can just defederate their server with the click of a button. I know some people making the #TwitterMigration may be missing the quote tweet option, but @Gargron explained the reasoning behind not having it quite well. I was just thinking about this because I saw someone on the other site tweet a very bad take and he got QTed, which led to some piling on. If he hadn’t been QTed, many wouldn’t have seen it. Here I find it a bit easier to just pass that stuff by or not see it at all. Definitely a less reflexive anger-inducing experience
