William Romaine, an evangelical, Anglican minister, writes on the efficacy of the Lord’s Supper. The dignity of human nature is preserved by #Christianity, because it teaches that God gives his own spirit to people. Likewise, as people see their self-worth, the more reluctant they will be to submit to degradation.

Religion being the opposite of the opiate of the masses. And all of this being a consequence of the doctrines of communion.

How can you promote the dignity of human nature?

William Paley, Anglican minister, examines the “right” to traffick in enslaved people. Traffickers fomented wars and mutual depredation in order to create situations where it is easy to pick people off. Here the wickedness starts.

Today, slavery apologists speak of bringing culture to unenlighted people. But the slavers created their own evidence.

How can you reassess your rights which may intrude upon those of others?

John Mayer was an English Puritan. Here lists duties from the English Catechism, such as doing good to all. We should soften our hearts and feel deep compassion in our bellies towards the poor. He also encourages an additional dimension, of being careful for others’s spiritual well being.

Would one necessarily be a distraction from the other? Can we look after our neighbors’ bodies and souls?

Hugh Latimer was a Protestant martyr. Here he considers attitudes we may have about helping a neighbor. He says some would be willing to to the best for their neighbor, as long as they lose no skin. He says that Christ would not hear that excuse, as He himself suffered harm for our sakes, and for our salvation was put to death.

Today, are we schooled against benevolence, by encouragement to imagine all the ways it could put us back?

How can you do your best for your neighbor?

Anthony Gilby, translator of the Geneva Bible, comments on Micah 2. He repeatss the adage: every rich man is either wicked or an heir of the wicked. Bishops and “mighty” people participate in oppression, maybe he can bring some to repentance. He fears the vengeance from the powerful.

Gilby was a Marian exile. Many Reformers complained of oppression by RC leaders.

Today, it’s, “Every critic of a job creator is wicked, or a known associate of the wicked.”

How can you be moved to repentance?

Robert William Dale was a Congregational pastor. Writing on doing the will of God, he reflects on principles God will judge the world (Mt 25:31ff). Jesus won’t ask about your sympathy for the hungry and miserable. Jesus will tell the righteous that they gave him meat when hungered.

John Piper, in contrast, has an alternative view, that Jesus will ask about bible reading.

How can you respond to Jesus’s needs beyond mere sympathy?

Francis Grimke, Presbyterian minister, offers a moral assessment of his day. He has hopes for Black people as he believes, North and South, some white people see that Black people are human, and full citizens with rights, both civil and political. Not a great many, but some.

Can these words about our history be said in schools and universities today? In many pulpits?

How can you give hope to others?

Clement, church father, considers #greed.

Proverbs 11:26 and Haggai 1:6-8 promise blessing to one that sells, doesn’t create artificial scarcity in a necessity. But are we no longer allowed to make value judgements about any action in the marketplace?

How can you consider how you gathereth wages?

Oswald Chambers, Baptist evangelist, writes on the Sermon on the Mount. Salvation is a “first mile”, and obedience is a second, both done by Christ in us. Chambers sees the difficult requirements of the SotM as a required passivity were Christ completes His work in us. Our right is to not insist on our rights.

Conservatives meanwhile tell oppressed they have no rights, yet every slight against them is persecution.

How can you not hurt the Son of God?

John Calvin, early Calvinist, comments on entertaining strangers (Heb 13:2). He says this wasn’t about the rich throwing parties, but about entertaining of the miserable and needy, many of whom then were Christian refugees fleeing religious persecution.

I remember back when conservatives advocated against helping Syrian Christian refugees, one guy said he’d revoke the “man card” of someone who’d flee. Put up your dukes vs. a missile, lad?

How can you entertain angels?
