We also find evidence for #ConvergentEvolution at the single amino acid scale in the DFR #enzyme of the brightly red-flowered Plowmania nyctaginoides, native to Southern Mexico. A DFR copy in this species has acquired the same AA substitution in the #ActiveSite that contributed to the evolution of enhanced DHK (red pigment precursor) activity in the genus #Iochroma (Solanaceae). This is the only obvious case of likely functional alteration of enzyme specificity in our dataset.
New #EvolutionPaper #preprint with @iochromaland on the evolution of the #flavonoid pathway in the Petunieae clade of #Solanaceae. We use multivariate phylogenetic comparative methods to analyze quantitative measures of #GeneExpression and floral flavonoid #pigment content in a phylogenetic context. We find that #evolutionary transitions in floral pigmentation appear to be largely underpinned by shifts in gene expression, and uncover tradeoffs between pathway branches. https://ecoevorxiv.org/repository/view/4991/

Very cool symposium at #SSB2023 on systematics in #México and the importance of language/cultural #inclusivity in #science!
Having an incredible time at #SSB2023 ! Loving the setup of lightning talks: so digestible and easy to listen to, and loving the emphasis on systematics in Mexico. And the art is hard to beat! @SystBiol

By banning some of us, Musk is sending a message to everyone else: Comply with the dictator or lose access. #Twitter has become a virtual simulation of authoritarian rule."

But Musk didn’t build Twitter. We, collectively, turned the bird app into a consequential power. If it remains under the control of a man who sees journalists as enemies, we have a moral responsibility to fly the coop.

I got myself banned from Elon Musk’s Twitter. Why you should, too

Next thing you know, it will be against the rules to mention Tesla’s stock price, criticize the Republican Party or link to stories in legitimate news outlets. We can’t enable this.

"We show that, whilst selection pushes genotypic and phenotypic evolution up the fitness landscape, development determines the admissible evolutionary pathway, such that evolutionary outcomes occur at path peaks rather than landscape peaks."

How development affects evolution

Abstract. Natural selection acts on developmentally constructed phenotypes, but how does development affect evolution? This question prompts a simultaneous cons

There are a few incentives to cite generously. Many folks get an alert when they are cited, and by citing them via *INDEXED* bib. (that google scholar will see) you notify them about your work. Similarly, if you cite data repositories, these will link to your paper. And generally I think rewarding people with citation incentivizes the production and sharing of data.
