Daily Psalm Reflection

We cannot read very far in the Psalms without drawing the conclusion that the psalmist seems to have been reading our mail. How is it that after centuries have passed we find someone who lived in a different time and culture expressing our innermost feelings, fears, and hopes?

Read Psalm 107:10-16

For he shatters the doors of bronze, and cuts in two the bars of iron.
Psalm 107:16

There are life situations that appear to be absolutely without hope. Sometimes our own actions put us in such dungeons; sometimes the actions of others are responsible. But however we get there, there is no getting out. And then God rescues us: from Egypt, from Babylon, from Calvary, from sin, from death.

Bible Gateway passage: Psalm 107:10-16 - New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

Some sat in darkness and in gloom, prisoners in misery and in irons, for they had rebelled against the words of God and spurned the counsel of the Most High. Their hearts were bowed down with hard labor; they fell down, with no one to help. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress; he brought them out of darkness and gloom, and broke their bonds apart.

For he satisfies the thirsty, and the hungry he fills with good things.
Psalm 107:9

Hunger and thirst are daily reminders that we have needs. We cannot exist without help. We at not self-contained. But God has not only created needs in us, he has provided fulfillments for us Every meal eaten, every cup of water drunk, is a sign of the satisfactions God provides in his creative providence and redemptive mercy.

Bible Gateway passage: Psalm 107:4-9 - New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to an inhabited town; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress; he led them by a straight way, until they reached an inhabited town. Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind.

Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, those he redeemed from trouble...
Psalm 107:2

The redeemed are summoned from the four quarters of the compass to give vigorous witness to God's goodness and God's love. As the roll is called, representative figures are announced to step forth and give a personal report on the ways in which redemption is experienced: "Let the redeemed of the Lord say SO!"

Book V (Psalms 107–150) -Psalm 107 Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Many Troubles - O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, those he redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise.
Psalm 106:47

The proper response to living in a culture permeated with sin is not to wash one's hands of it (Pilate's futile gesture), nor to separate oneself from it with rites of imagined purification; it is to engage in prayers of intercession for God's mercy and to give praise for one's salvation.

Bible Gateway passage: Psalm 106:47-48 - New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise. Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. And let all the people say, “Amen.” Praise the LORD!

Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against his people... Nevertheless he regarded their distress when he heard their cry.
Psalm 106:40,44

We connect cause and effect with a therefore; God connects them with a nevertheless. The logical consequence of sin is damnation; the gospel consequence is salvation. "Nevertheless" is one of the most important words in Scripture, for it miraculously joins human sin with God's salvation.

Bible Gateway passage: Psalm 106:40-46 - New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against his people, and he abhorred his heritage; he gave them into the hand of the nations, so that those who hated them ruled over them. Their enemies oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their power. Many times he delivered them, but they were rebellious in their purposes and were brought low through their iniquity. Nevertheless, he regarded their distress when he heard their cry.

They poured out innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; and the land was polluted with blood.
Psalm 106:38

Instead of reward came a series of defections and compromises; instead of sharing their faith Israel adopted the savage rites of child sacrifice. The land that was supposed to flow "with milk and honey," in disobedience flowed with the blood of innocent children.

Bible Gateway passage: Psalm 106:34-39 - New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

They did not destroy the peoples, as the LORD had commanded them, but they mingled with the nations and learned to do as they did. They served their idols, which became a snare to them. They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons; they poured out innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood.

They angered the LORD at the waters of Meribah, and it went ill with Moses on their account; for they made his spirit bitter, and he spoke words that were rash.
Psalm 106:32-33

The story of faith is studded with place names that recall God's grace; Bethel, Sinai, Carmel, Olivet. Many others are memories of human sin - Meribah is one of those. The geography of salvation shows desirable places to go and troublesome routes to avoid.

Then they attached themselves to the Baal of Peor, and ate sacrifices offered to the dead...
Psalm 106:28

The sin at Baal Peor (see Numbers 25), a particularly vile form of orgy, was a religious act that comprised worship and sacrifice, a combination of the faith of the fathers and the cult of Canaan. Mature faith, however, is not a result of assimilating every religion we touch, but of choosing God in every aspect of our existence.

Bible Gateway passage: Psalm 106:28-31 - New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

Then they attached themselves to the Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to the dead; they provoked the LORD to anger with their deeds, and a plague broke out among them. Then Phinehas stood up and interceded, and the plague was stopped. And that has been reckoned to him as righteousness from generation to generation forever.

They exchanged the glory of God for the image of an ox that eats grass.
Psalm 106:20

Neither going to church nor staying home is proof against sin. The psalmist collects instances that document sin's perverseness, the seemingly unending ways in which sin may erupt in our worship ("worshiped a cast image") and in our homes ("grumbled in their tents").

Bible Gateway passage: Psalm 106:19-27 - New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

They made a calf at Horeb and worshiped a cast image. They exchanged the glory of God for the image of an ox that eats grass. They forgot God, their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt, wondrous works in the land of Ham, and awesome deeds by the Red Sea. Therefore he said he would destroy them— had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him, to turn away his wrath from destroying them.

But they soon forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel.
Psalm 106:13

Forgetfulness (v. 13) and insurrection (v. 16) are often found paired. When we forget God's ways of providing for us, we impatiently seek to set up our own self-government. And our rebellious at tempts to lead ourselves can be carried out only in an atmosphere devoid of the memory of grace.

Bible Gateway passage: Psalm 106:13-18 - New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

But they soon forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel. But they had a wanton craving in the wilderness and put God to the test in the desert; he gave them what they asked but sent a wasting disease among them. They were jealous of Moses in the camp and of Aaron, the holy one of the LORD. The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan and covered the faction of Abiram.
