It's odd rebuilding the network of completely random but interesting people I made friends with but lost after leaving Twitter.
Short-form social media organically lets me find interesting people. I often use it like a big party at a friend-of-a-friend's place - halfway between curated and public. You don't have to ask around about someone's history or behavior - it's right there. Or it isn't, and you get to interpret why it is the way it is. And since unique users, follower count, and other metrics of "clout" aren't monetized, there's little stopping people from making topic-specific "alt"s and segmenting their personas for whatever reason.
I started using Twitter in 2008 when it was mainly a way for groups of people at tech conferences to coordinate dinner plans. No algorithm, no curated feeds, nothing but knowing a few people IRL and following people they RT'd, organically and generatively expanding one's network.
