We represent over 103 000 doctoral researchers in Germany | 36 member representations | 77% of doctoral researchers with elected representation.

Our new blog post takes a closer look at the question of tracking working time in academia without falling into simple yes or no answers.

Working time regulations are meant to protect researchers, while academia often needs highly fleixble working hours. hallenge is finding solutions that respect both realities. We argue for a differentiated approach. One that protects researchers while preserving the freedom that science needs to thrive.

Mental health in academia is not an individual issue. It is a structural one. Insecurity, overload, isolation and the impact of poor supervision are not personal shortcomings. They are symptoms of a system that needs change.

As the Bundesverband Promovierende we are committed to pushing for better working condition, higher supervision standards, and better support.

Let's build an academic culture that protects mental health instead of draining it. Read the full blog post on promovierende.de

Why does one anonymous review hold so much influence over academic careers?

We take a closer look at how the peer review system shapes who gets published, who gets funded, and who gets to stay in academia. The pressure to publish or perish is already intense, but when a single reviewer can delay or derail months of work, the system becomes even harder to navigate, especially for early‑career researchers.

Does your university really know you?
Many doctoral researchers feel invisible, scattered across faculties, on different contracts, and often missing from official communication channels. The result is a community that exists everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

Our latest blog post explores why this happens and what needs to change so doctoral researchers can finally be seen, heard, and supported.

Today the UNESCO highlights the structural conditions that continue to shape scientific careers. Despite formal equality, informal hierarchies, dependencies, and exclusive communication cultures still determine who is heard, supported, and visible in academia.
As the Bundesverband Promovierende, we work to challenge these inequalities and strengthen the visibility of female researchers through our project “Conversations with Doctoral Researchers – Women Discuss Their Science”.

We wish all of you a wonderful time in the end of the year and would like to thank you for the great times we had with you. We are looking forward to the upcoming times in 2026: there are still a lot of things to do!

Online Meetings – Do They Ensure Inclusive Participation?

We’ve all learned a lot about online meetings since Corona. Zoom lectures and research talks have become the norm, but are they accessible to everyone?

Not everyone is tech-savvy, and people with hearing difficulties face extra challenges in virtual discussions. How can we make online meetings more inclusive?

As the Bundesverband Promovierende, we want to spark a conversation: Have you seen a great solution? Drop your thoughts below!

We at the German Association of Doctoral Researchers (Bundesverband Promovierende e.V.) stand in solidarity with academics and researchers in the U.S. facing repression. These attacks on research and teaching freedoms are alarming and unprecedented.

Institutions must resist coercion and uphold critical thought. We call on German politicians and international organizations to act in support of academic freedom.
