For diamonds, the asymmetry gives an impression of directionality. The amount of shift dependent on placement of the ends along the strand.
Whence the impression of turning, swirling spirals here? I have no idea. We have straight strands of diamonds, just as before.
It took me years to understand that the point of a Thesaurus isn't to find zero-cost replacements with identical meaning (something that's rarely useful).
A thesaurus is a plot of the neighbourhood of a word -- the words of adjacent meaning -- so that you can inch around, where the right word doesn't quite come to mind, because of this or that defect. (And when you're really in trouble, you sometimes have to wander a couple of steps).
It's obvious really, but it's never really explained.

Had a dream last night that the Vatican ranked the Top 7 Most Evil Cats, one cat for each of the deadly sins. Like the Proudest cat, the Greediest cat, etc. It was such a hit, they started selling calendars with their pictures.
My cat would definitely rank as the most Gluttonous cat. His desire for treats is insatiable.
