I’ve got this really ambivalent feeling, it’s not at all comfortable. Living in a rural and highly forested area subject to various natural environmental hazards, I’m very interested in resilient local infrastructure. But there’s another group in the Venn diagram of people interested in resilient local infrastructure, and they use terms like “sovereign” and “surveillance”. And let me just say, there are some positions there to which I’m very sympathetic, but there are others which make me distinctly uncomfortable. When philosophy meets the cutting edge of mathematics and technology, it requires a *lot* of disciplined and focused thought to do the right thing. This is hard, and I worry that the implementers aren’t doing enough of the philosophy.
Last week I learned that a pair of MWO astronomers took a picture of Pluto in 1925-five years before it was "discovered."

What's cool is the photo wasn't taken by the big scopes, but a 10" Cooke Triplet that was inside this little dome that I know little else about.
Note to anyone else: this is less about the beta software, and more about what happens when the aging hardware dies and the arising difficulties when replacing it. watchOS can’t be rolled back from beta to release without mailing the watch to Apple, and a phone can’t pair to a watch if their operating systems mismatch, and device unpairing is complicated when the old phone isn’t actually admitting that it is a phone any more.
Note to future me: it does not matter how cool or attractive the next version looks. DO NOT INSTALL BETA OPERATING SYSTEM ON YOUR ACTUAL PHONE.

Luigi is charged as a terrorist for tagging a CEO, but a man who targeted 3 individuals, including 2 senators, is not charged as a terrorist.

Do you guys see it now? Yet?

Well, my phone seems to have given up being a telephone. The WiFi radio still works, but cellular is just out. This couldn’t wait another couple of months?

I didn't get any good photos of the No Kings protest in Portland today - but my wife and I both found this sign amusing.

This felt too valuable not to share. Braille-labeled maps of washrooms to help people find and use facilities in the washroom. Everyone deserves to get in, do their business, wash their hands, and get out in peace and safety.

This seems valuable for all public spaces.

Reading Apple’s documentation feels kind of like listening to a pitch man. “In order to do the thing, perform a ritual (link to another document), then decorate (link to another document) the place (link to another document).” Any given document has the same structure, with every specific term of art being a link to a document. There is no way to *learn* from this stuff; the examples are useful only if you already know what everything means and just need a reminder for specific syntax or procedural order. There’s only so much tautology I can handle in a morning.
