The more I think about this Electoral Commission data leak, the angrier I am. They didn’t need a centralised database to run elections. They compiled it for “research purposes”. If you can’t protect data, don’t collect it. It’s not enough to call it a “very sophisticated” attack: if you’re some kind of bumpkin organisation that can’t fend off a clever attacker, you shouldn’t be running a database of everyone’s details.

Caught with their data breeches down

All our data has been exfiltrated by hackers, every one of the the forty-odd million adults registered to vote in the UK – which, may I remind you, we have to do by law – and the Electoral Commission’s response is not good enough.

Alert for devs ->
If you have a dotnet project with test deps on Moq, and supply chain security is important, you might want to consider an alternative rather quickly, and definitely don't bump versions without thinking on it pretty hard.

last year I wrote about real estate agents collecting too much personal information, and how third-party platforms make this worse. I called for reform to the privacy act + state residential tenancy acts to better protect renters in the digital economy.

@drwaus has since done a lot of advocacy for renter digital rights -- which is especially important in our current housing crisis.

Here's an explainer with links to our work, submissions, and resources we find useful.

DRW calls for regulation of RentTech amongst housing crisis - Digital Rights Watch

RentTech is threatening renter privacy, security and making the housing crisis worse. We need RentTech regulation to better protect renters.

Perth Trans Choir - Expressions of Interest

Hi there! I'm looking to see how much interest there would be in starting a Perth choir specifically for trans (and binary and gender non-conforming) people. A bit about me: My name is Hayley Bech (she/they), and I'm an experienced choir singer and director. I love barbershop (you know, like the quartets of old guys, except we ain't all old men and don't always wear boater hats! ;P ) and a cappella. I grew up in QLD and directed a choir there for 2 years before moving to Perth. I'm currently one of two Assistant Musical Directors for The Baden Street Singers, an award winning barbershop and a cappella group in Perth. I also have my own app for choirs called Choir Concierge, so as you can see I live and breathe this stuff! Note: I won't share your info or use it for commercial purposes. I'll only contact you regarding a Perth trans choir.

I love the fact that the bulk of my time migrating to a new phone is spent on configuring work related stuff, on a device that I'm expected to have but am not in any way compensated for.
JK, I fkn hate this.

I'm looking to speak to some #ComputerVision folks about what seems like a *relatively* simple problem: How do you extract the coordinates of the border-lines of something like an information table?

https://2d-ocr.glitch.me has access to coordinate data for every character, but they're being grouped across lines and split within them.

In addition, this could potentially move table-OCR in-browser and out of Google's hands, help very welcome.

If he doesn’t need to pay then it was clearly valueless.

It has even less value now.
