It was January the 26th. I could spend my time on the Internet arguing about "Australia Day" versus "Invasion Day", or I could spend my time with a real hobby. Which one do you think I chose?
(FWIW: yesterday was just another working day for me.)

It's been decades since I've had a "White" Christmas. I'd like to show my wife and daughter one day. However, I am glad that Brisbane really doesn't have to worry about this sort of thing.
This TasteAtlas meme has been doing the rounds, to general condemnation.
There are many obvious problems with it: trying to rank a subjective measure objectively is one, and the United States at 8 is another.
But there's one problem that no one seems to have remarked on - why are cuisines ranked by countries in the first place?
There are some countries that are too large and diverse, and for some countries - China is a prime example - there should be entries for provinces or states or what-have you. Trying to mix Guangdong cuisines up with Sichuan cuisines is a category error.
Mastofolk: if you were doing a list of "best regional cuisines", what countries should be broken up and dissolved to do a fair job?
This is Little My, one of the characters from the Moomintroll series. I have two of the illustrated books that I like to read to my daughter. She finds Little My funny (she makes her laugh) but crazy and "evil'.
I have a bad habit of reading stories and trying to keep the "original" pronunciation. With this character, it's is the original Finnish/Swedish /myː/, rather than the English /maɪ/ (or Vietnamese /miː/). Since /y/ (a close fronted rounded vowel) isn't in any of the languages my daughter reads, it is a frustrating experience for her when she tries to repeat it. My fault.
I stopped crossposting between Twitter and her because it annoyed people. But that doesn't stop me sneaking the odd Thread Reader App in. (Because if Twitter goes down, at least there is a recording.)
The thread is about the stability of Twitter, from a systems perspective. Worth it from the image alone (now with alt text!)
This is pretty fucked.
In the campaigns I've been involved in for the Greens (including once as a candidate), the impartiality of the relevant electoral commissions - the AEC and ECQ - was pretty much accepted among everybody.
It's 2022. The Victorian Liberals (who have decided to embrace their inner "cooker") don't think that way any more, and have decided to dabble in some "Stop the steal" tactics.
I hope it blows up in their face; I am confident it will. But it is an unwelcome development.
It's real (I had to look it up on Google Maps for myself), and I'm horrified.
Orlando is like a dystopian version of Brisbane or the Gold Goast. God knows we like our sprawl here, but at least we aren't repelled by bike tracks.

I think @dai_le's politics need improvement, especially on climate change. (Like her, I have family in Sài Gòn that are going to be hurt hard by rising sea levels.)
But at least I try to get her name right. "Dai Le" (or Đài Lê) is her name; "Dai Lee" is lazy and racist.

Hey @marieclaire - why haven’t you included Dai Lee - is it because she is an Asian Australian and not a white Karen like your readers? #auspol
