A senior official at the COP29 climate change conference in Azerbaijan appears to have used his role to arrange a meeting to discuss potential fossil fuel deals.

A secret recording shows the chief executive of Azerbaijan's COP29 team, Elnur Soltanov, discussing "investment opportunities" in the state oil and gas company with a man posing as a potential investor.

"We have a lot of gas fields that are to be developed," says Soltanov.

As well as being chief executive of COP29, Soltanov is also the deputy energy minister of Azerbaijan and is on the board of Socar, Azerbaijan's state energy firm.

With half the month now behind us, June 2024 is very likely to be the warmest June on record. It is on track to beat 2023's record by nearly 0.2C, and may represent an ominous sign that global temperatures are not falling very quickly despite the fading of El Niño conditions.

When a relatively moderate climate scientist like Hausfather worries that global temperatures are not falling as quickly as he expected and calls it "an ominous sign," we all should be concerned.

It seems more and more obvious that Dr. James Hansen is right when he says "acceleration of global warming is now hard to deny."

Hansen also says that "for all practical purposes global temperature has already reached the 1.5°C milestone."

So the world has blown past 1.5C. And now the challenge is to stay below 2C, or 3C, or even worse.
