Last week I published my second book. It's called Unlocked: The real science of screen time (and how to spend it better), and does exactly what it says on the tin. If you want to cut through the hype and scaremongering, this might be for you: https://linktr.ee/unlockedbook

I’ve got a new book out. It’s called Unlocked: the real science of screen time (and how to spend it better), and it’s about the complex, messy state of the evidence base underpinning many of our fears about digital technologies. It’s also about finding ways to think differently, and more productively, about our own relationships with screens. New Scientist have called it “a realistic tonic to the doom and gloom”. You can get it here: https://linktr.ee/unlockedbook

I’ve got a new article in the Guardian today (both print and online!), about the new video games research framework, and why we should start taking games more seriously: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/aug/21/video-games-gaming-violence-entertainment
Let’s ditch the tired tropes about video games – and research their impact properly

No, gaming isn’t a niche, violence-inducing pastime – it’s the defining entertainment medium of our time, says professor of psychology Pete Etchells

I wrote this a few months ago for the print edition, but here’s the online version of my Science Focus article about the problems with a relentless focus on correlation when trying to figure out if social media is tanking our mental health: https://www.sciencefocus.com/the-human-body/social-media-children/
Child depression rates are skyrocketing - but social media isn’t to blame. Here’s why

It’s tempting to think that our digital lives on TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat are the cause of a child mental health crisis. But there might be something altogether more analogue going on, argues Prof Pete Etchells.

Don't engage with criticism, simply repeat the words 'gaming disorder' and it will magically become real.
It’s been so great having sensible and productive conversations about what good research should/could look like, with industry partners, policymakers, and some of the brightest minds in the research field. It’s very much the start of a journey, not the end, and I’m looking forward to see what comes out of it.
Video games research, by and large, has existed in limbo for a number of years now. While there have been repeated calls for mechanisms via which independent researchers can engage with industry, little real headway has been made (with some notable exceptions). IMO this new framework is a big step forward in plugging that gap.
