Digging through archived surveys over the past few weeks has given me new appreciation for the conditions my predecessors had to work under (I’m looking at you SPSS). But seriously, this (from and actual codebook) is just madness.

Are Four-Year Public Colleges Engines for Economic Mobility? Evidence from Statewide Admissions Thresholds | EdWorkingPapers

Four-year public colleges may play an important role in supporting intergenerational mobility by providing an accessible path to a bachelor’s degree and increasing students' earnings. Leveraging a midsize state’s GPA- and SAT-based admissions thresholds for the four-year public sector, I use a regression discontinuity design to estimate the effect of four-year public college admissions on earnings and college costs.

The philosophy of education has been unfairly neglected. An account mostly from within the ivory tower—a defence of why it should matter rather than an inquiry into pedagogy—but still some food for thought. ‘The Main Enterprise of the World: Rethinking Education’, and ‘The Handbook of Philosophy of Education’, both just out, sound intriguing.

Hi @RoryKraft ! Welcome to Mastodon. Shall we set up an AAPT server?
Bayard Rustin (1912-1987) worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr. for decades as a planner of the Montgomery bus boycott and as the primary architect of the 1963 March on Washington. A confidant and adviser, he introduced MLK to Gandhi’s principles of nonviolent resistance. His role in the civil rights movement was largely relegated to the background, however, because he was gay. In the 1980s, he became a public advocate for gay and other human rights. #BlackFriday #LGBTQ
Haven’t had the time to do an #introduction here yet, so here goes: #philosopher working as an admin at the moment. I’m chiefly interested in the ‘why’ of education, and how it gets instantiated (or not) in #generaleducation. I’d love to hear about schools with distinctive missions and how their gen Ed requirements reflect those missions. Also, for my European colleagues: do your units have mission / vision / values statements?I s there any talk of purpose beyond research and/or career?
