Data for the Public Domain. Wikidata based tool to discover authors, find works and learn about the public domain. Hosted on Toolforge. https://paulina.toolforge.org
Thanks to our Outreachy intern Nurah Wakili, we're gradually releasing some new features in Paulina related to creating and editing author and work items on Wikidata. You can help us test the new features by going to our website, logging in with your Wikimedia account and editing. Please let us know if you find any bug or issue: https://paulina.toolforge.org

Paulina invites you to learn about the cultural heritage of humanity. It is a multilingual tool, powered by Wikidata, that allows you to search for people and find out if they have freely accessible works in the public domain. It also facilitates the understanding of copyright terms and helps to know when a work enters the public domain in each country.

Many people ask about the story behind the name ‘Paulina’. When the project began, we called it Data Tools for the Public Domain. It was a long, quite boring name, so we thought about renaming the tool after an author whose works were in the public domain. Paulina Luisi was a Uruguayan feminist author and doctor from the early 20th century, and we thought her name was a good option.
Of course, you can learn more about Paulina Luisi, and access her works, visiting Paulina: https://paulina.toolforge.org/author/Q7154948

This year Paulina is participating in @outreachy, an internship program that aims to increase the presence of underrepresented communities in the open source world. Around 20 people applied for our project, which involves adding functionality to edit Wikidata directly within the Paulina tool. The developer selected for the internship is Nurah Wakili, from Nigeria, who is doing an great job and is blogging about the experience. We recommend reading her latest post: https://nunucodes.wordpress.com/2026/01/21/midpoint-project-progress-integrating-wikidata-editing-into-paulina/

One of Paulina's most useful features is that, thanks to #Wikidata, it allows you to find out the copyright term for any country. In the top menu, you can click on the "Countries and Terms" option to access a list of countries with their respective copyright terms: https://paulina.toolforge.org/countries/

Clicking on a particular country will give you access to more information and statistics. We plan to add much more info to the country pages in the coming months to help you discover local works and authors.
