@nuclearpasta banquet of fury goes hard

Be ungovernable, like birds who make nests OUT OF ANTI-BIRD SPIKES. A new study describes resourceful Dutch & Belgian corvids besting evil architecture by stealing metal anti-bird strips and using them like thorny twigs, to construct their homes.

Like thorns, the spikes may protect their nests from predators.

Lead author Auke-Florian Hiemstra wrote an epic 🧵 about his research that's worth a read: https://twitter.com/AukeFlorian/status/1678703433900064773

“Bird nests made from anti-bird spikes! 🤯 Even for me as a nest researcher, these are the craziest bird nests I've ever seen. Today my paper came out on this rebellious behaviour. And it's like telling a joke... A thread. 🧵”

@arstechnica I’m still on the AI skeptic side of the fence until the hype calms down, but assistive technology (and of course my personal fave, laser weeder) is of clear and obvious value.

How AI can make gaming better for all players

Artificial intelligence can make gaming more accessible and learn what individuals need.

@ignova I am a huge fan of color coding my drafts/ edits in the main file to help with the ‘words mean nothing’ phenomenon. Just that little bit of metatextual info gives me enough break the blur and helps me think through my choices.
@announcements @cd24 Here I pay in, but it’s genuinely more of a community space because of that.
@announcements @cd24 I love the federated aspect! I love that I can interact with the wider network but also have a home base of people in my area talking about what’s going on locally (why I chose sfba over an interest-centric server). I also love what it’s not - Twitter et al always felt like a mall food court masquerading as the town square. Yes I could visit, but the intent was always to get me to buy something & it got more intrusive as profit margins demanded.

2006 - 2022: Corporate content hosts are so cheap and easy that no one has an incentive to learn to self-host content, and people who were previously self-hosting content move over to big "social" platforms

2022 - … : Platforms close off in every imaginable way and start taking every opportunity to extract rents from users, benefits that originally got people to move over now gone, but the network effects are such you can no longer switch to open alternatives or convince other people to do so

The promotions came so quickly. One straight to the next, the rubber stamp clack-clacking like a domino fall.

I heard the whispers, of course. How I didn’t earn it, my face did. A name like mine on the rolls? Bait for my father, his old war heroics still scalding the rich and bloodless.

I didn’t care. My name was on the captain’s log. Fastest in guild history.

The hatch was halfway open when I knew - they were right, it had been a trick.
But I was the mark.
