The average fire ant queen lives 6 to 8 years. This pretty typical for ant queens. Carpenter ant queens live from 10 to 15 years. The little black ants? Lasius niger and neoniger (these are small black ants found in the US, UK, Europe and more) have queens that live for two to three decades.

There may be a thirty year old insect in your yard and she is very busy!

(Six years ago this was the "ant fact" that made be obsessed with ants.)

En finir avec les idées fausses sur l’antispécisme

Aujourd’hui j’ai très envie de partager avec vous cette excellente lecture du récent ouvrage publié par Victor Duran le Peuch (que vous connaissez peut-être déjà grâce à son génial podcast « Comme un poisson dans l’eau » ou ses diverses conférences en lien avec le spécisme et le sentientisme) aux éditions de l’atelier.

Victor propose ici une recension quasi exhaustive des idées reçues sur l’antispécisme, en les abordant toutes de manière concise mais extrêmement précise et pertinente : « L’antispécisme prend les animaux pour des humains », « L’humain est fait pour être carnivore », « On peut tuer un animal, mais avec respect », « Aimer les animaux c’est détester les humains », « Le véganisme n’est pas accessible à tout le monde », « L’antispécisme c’est un truc de bobos »…

J’ai particulièrement apprécié l’effort de concision pour faire tenir en un seul ouvrage autant de données percutantes mais nuancées, ce qui le rend d’autant plus accessible et recommandable. Il rentre d’office dans mon top 3 des ouvrages sur la thématique de l’antispécisme !

Je ne peux qu’en recommander la lecture à celleux que le sujet interpelle ou questionne, mais également à toustes les militant.es antispécistes, qui y trouveront matière à affiner leurs argumentaires.

Some good news in a time of darkness: the European wildcat, Felis sylvestris, is making a comeback! This thoughtful-looking example was photographed in a mountainous region of the Czech republic.

The European wildcat's extreme elusiveness may have helped it avoid hunters in places where a larger native cat, the lynx, has been killed off. There may be about 140,000 European wildcats spread across more than two dozen countries. But they are very hard to find!

Wildlife photographer Andrea Giovanni, who made a video of one, writes:

"I'd never even thought of taking photos of wildcats, for a simple reason: I thought it was impossible, or at least, extremely difficult. It's considered 'the ghost of the forests' because it's very, very elusive, and it's hard to predict where it can be spotted. Other animals tend to follow the same trails through the forest. The wildcat goes wherever she wants to."

One reason the European wildcat is coming back is increased legal protections. But another is that villages in Italy and other regions are becoming depopulated! Some are very worried about declining human populations. But it does make room for other species. That gives me some hope for the future.
