Even if CO₂ emissions decreased annually as much as during the pandemic lockdown, we wouldn't achieve our climate targets.

While individuals made huge sacrifices, the system remained. This shows that individual action will not solve climate change. We need the system to change.

@yogthos One of my favorite pieces on this topic is "Hands, Tools, Weapons" (https://redsails.org/hands-tools-weapons/#introduction), on the origins of sexual division of labor

"hunting became the prerogative of men [..] for reasons of greater mobility, individual and collective, in comparison to women” subject to the biological constraints of pregnancy and childcare.

Inequality is self-reinforcing, even when originating out of good intentions. An equal society means constantly combating inequality. It's an active process.

Hands, Tools, Weapons

There is in ethnology an aspect of the sexual division of labor which up to the present time has neither been studied globally nor considered in an appropriate fashion: that of the tools which men and women use. The question is to know if there exists a sexual differentiation in…

Having implicit power structures form without any formal method of recall is precisely what allows unjust hierarchies to come into being.

When there are no explicit hierarchies then implicit ones necessarily arise because some individuals are more charismatic and extroverted than others, and people tend to rally around them.

Louder for those in the back.

@Terra @ourhumanfam Beutiful piece. I just recently finished Dominico Locurdo’s “Class Struggle”, which emphasizes recognition among class struggles as a necessary precursor to social progress. Great read, but intense - and I’m still trying to reinterpret my world through that lens. The commonality with your piece helped me understand both works a bit more. Thanks for sharing your experience.

@gratefuldread I can’t passively watch Nestle try to whitewash their inhumane history.

Before you give Nestle any credit, remember that this is the same company that aggressively marketed baby formula to new mothers in developing countries to prematurely end their lactation and make them reliant on formula. This is the same company that steals public water from regions in drought to resell. There’s no shortage of humanitarian atrocities in this company’s past.

@yogthos Really spinning two separate threads here. Let me make sure I’m understanding the author: China dominates world markets with technically-empowered communism and state ownership of the means of production. Also, China’s social record isn’t pristine (and send the troops). What the author never explains is how these two things are necessarily related. Pro-tip, you can still match China’s growth by adopting their policies. Nobody is forcing you to repress ethnic groups along the way.
