I commit journalism at the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper, where I work as a web editor and tech reporter, and for the Apple-centric TidBITS tech-news site and newsletter. "How the f**k did I end up in Minnesota?" this shivering Puerto Rican groused. Then I took up cross-country skiing ... and I came to dread winter's end. Banner by @[email protected]
I…. huh. 😒
What may be a silly/stupid question but here goes (no laughter, please): Is there a way to open the web app in the advanced interface by default? Thanks.

You'd have to be a genuine idiot to trust your entire financial life to Elon Musk, but he's counting on millions of idiots to do just that. Don't be one of them.

Elon Musk gives X employees one year to replace your bank

Elon Musk held a Twitter / X all-hands call on Thursday and discussed plans to transform the platform into a financial services hub, according to leaked audio.

The two Apple-device features I continually trigger by accident, which is making me nuts: the customize-wallpaper-from-the-Lock-screen-by-touching-and-holding thing on the iPhone and the grab-a-screenshot-by-dragging-from-the-corner thing on the iPad.

I shudder to think of the moderation on a NYTimes-run Mastodon server, if it's anything like their op-ed pages.

This is why I'm wary of newsrooms standing up their own instances.

Here's more proof that Twitter is falling apart: It's algorithm has become convinced I'm a hockey fan.
@jcenters informs me: “It’s the child-proof coating. You can scrub it off but better to avoid it entirely.”
AirTag tip: When replacing your batteries, get the Energizer and NOT the seemingly identical Duracell. It won’t work (due to a slight difference in thickness).

Keep an eye (and a nose) on the power adapters used to juice your computers and other devices.

This morning I smelled what seemed to be overheating electronics. I think I traced the odor to a Nomad two-port USB-C adapter that was too hot to touch. I'm trashing it.

I've long loved Nomad's gear, but I am treating its adapters with caution until I figure out whether this was an isolated incident. I’m sticking to my Apple USB-C adapters for now.
